Daniel, The Beasts, The Ancient of Days…

Daniel, The Beasts, The Ancient of Days…

There are many significant details we must mention here in the beginning before the introduction to this chapter.  It is imperative to locate and position our mind to what Daniel was looking at during his dream and vision in a geographical point of view, also we must determined and define some terms used during Daniel chapter 7.

Daniel’s Timeline Based on Chapters on PDF  (Click on this link until you see the Image on PDF Format)

The Great Sea was another way known during Daniel’s period for what is known today as the “Mediterranean Sea”.  Daniel is living in the province of Shushan at the Far East of the Babylonian kingdom, and close to the Western North point of what is known today as the Persian Gulf.  Shushan was considered, by the Babylonians and later by the Medes and Persians, the second capital of the Babylonian empire.  Daniel is an older man, who had been thru the beginning of the Babylonian Empire with Nebuchadnezzar (the king that God made a beast and later restored him with a new heart, and whom, a gentile king, wrote the chapter 4 of this Book of Daniel).  Keep in mind that life expectancy, especially for those on power, was not too favorable.  Please set your mind as if you are looking at the preamble of Babylonian king Belshazzar experienced, that is the vision of king Belshazzar seeing the Hand of God writing in the wall of his palace, chapter 5.  At this point God in His Omni-Powerful, Omni-Presence and Omni-Sufficiency, is preparing Daniel to what is to come in front of his eyes in a matters of few years after this fact.

Dan 7:1 LITV

(1)  In the first year of Belshazzar, king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head on his bed. Then he related the dream, giving the sum of the matters.

Here in this verse it is very important to locate time wise, our mind and to transport ourselves to the timeline of events keeping in order the above paragraph that explain the events prior this moment. Daniel “saw”…  This is a term use by the Literate Translation, translation I always and usually use during my Bible Studies.  Below is the same verse extracted from the King James Version, which reads as follows:

Dan 7:1 KJV

(1)  In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters.

To the naked eyes there is no much difference among the two versions, there is neither a discrepancy, but most be mentioned to those that are more into the roots of the words, known as “etymology”.  As I am doing the research on this particular part of the verse, intrigues me the use of this word in the Literate Translation.  I also used the “Word Study Series”  “The Complete Word Study Old Testament” by Zodhiates (© 1994 AMG International, Inc.), and I discover that in their process of translating this particular verse they “applied the best process to make every word of the Bible understandable to the English reader by reference to the original manuscripts”, and I quote.

But the Holy Spirit intention is very clear in the use of the term “saw”, and allow me to explain myself.  In order for you to see something you must be not just conscious in mind but capable in your senses and abilities to understand what it is presented to you at the moment in time.  I do not agreed with King James translation of this verse, because I think the intention of the Holy Spirit here is to tell us that Daniel was not having a simple normal dream, but above and beyond of normal, it was a Dream with all details of reality and expectation of what God wants to communicate to Daniel.  Of course that is my humble opinion.  There is also the part that indicates that Daniel had “visions”, and that also strike me.  As I prayed to the Lord for understanding on this matters, I felt that what the intention, again, from God thru the Holy Spirit, here was to make sure that we understood in a clear and vivid manner, that Daniel not only had a one time “Dream”, but God reveal to Daniel thru “visions”, in a plural term of the use of this word, verifying to his servant God’s intention and message, for such not to be confuse, misunderstood, or misinterpreted by the recipient.

God is not a God of confusion; He is very clear and to the point.  We as human are the ones that make simple things too complicated.

1Co_14:33  For God is not of confusion, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.

Pro 3:4-7 LITV

(4)  and you shall find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

(5)  Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, and lean not to your own understanding.

(6)  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

(7)  Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear Jehovah and depart from evil.

In the verse one the Bible tells us that Daniel related the dream, to whom and how it is not a specific about it, but we must understand that one way of doing so was thru the manuscripts of the Book of Daniel.

Dan 7:2-4 LITV

(2)  Daniel spoke and said, In my vision by night I was looking. And, behold, the four winds of the heavens were stirring up the Great Sea.

(3)  And four great beasts came up from the sea, different from one another.

(4)  The first was like a lion and had eagle’s wings. I watched until its wings were torn off. And it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.

As we continue on our journey of this chapter of the Book of Daniel, in verse two Daniel spoke and said (to whom and when it is not specified, because does not matter), in his “vision by night I was looking.”  This is very clear-cut to the point; He “was looking” as in the verse one said, “he saw”.  He was completely aware of what he was experiencing thru the Lord’s vision.

Daniel started too detailed his vision.

The four winds of the heavens were stirring up the Great Sea,” he said.  This is a very clear form to express that was going to be a lot of action and turbulence in the human atmosphere.  Human history was going to be change in a quick and radical way.  The world as he knew it was not going to be the same.  Also the expression “Great Sea” was in reference of the Mediterranean Sea.  Looking at the geographical map of the location, you must imagine the entire world, as they knew, from the West (Greece, Cappadocia), from the North (Media), from the East (Persia), and from the South (Egypt, Israel), this is in a general geographical way for more clear reference.

Daniel continue explaining his dream and visions saying that four great beast came from the sea and that each was different one to the other.  Noticed how Daniel expressed the term “beasts” which is different from a term that is normally used in or by other versions, “creature”, which is not the term here used by Daniel.

(Chaldee); from H2418; an animal: – beast.

It is very interesting to observed that Daniel only see four creatures coming out of the sea.  Why not more than those?  You will ask.  After a long meditation and prayer for the Lord to reveal to my why, it came to my mind the following; there are before the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ only four kingdoms that actually make a remarkable difference in the history of human kind.  After the birth of our Lord Jesus, there were other nations subjugating other nations, men that took power and became monarchs, kings, dictators and so on.  There was even a time in where the Queen of Spain and the King of England expressed about their dominion around the world (that was the old and the new world as it was known later the land discovered by Columbus), that; “…The sun will never die…”, in their perspectives land.

But what theologians, preachers, pastors, educators and many others do not understand is that with the birth of the Lord and even more with the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ the debt was paid and since then there will not, there was not, there not any other kingdom but the one that will be, it was, and is for ever and eternity in the Lord Our Savior.  That is another subject of discussion and study for a future Blog.  Of course let me say that is my humble opinion.

Dan 7:4 LITV

(4)  The first was like a lion and had eagle’s wings. I watched until its wings were torn off. And it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.

If you remember the image representative to the Babylonian kingdom was very much so as is described in this particular verse.  In any case, I have attached an image of this particular Babylonian kingdom symbol in this paragraph for you to make reference to.

It is evident that this is the Babylonian kingdom, and when Daniel indicates that the wings were turn off, it does mean the power of the kingdom was over.  Always remember that this chapter’s events are taking place before the chapter 6 in the narratives chapters of the Book of Daniel.  At this point it is a little bit confusing for Daniel to understand this image and it is not until later that he has the entire vision cleared by the Holy Spirit to Daniel.  It does also said that it was lifted from the Earth, indicating this way the death of Nebuchadnezzar after his heart had being change to a man that recognized his limitations in front of the All Mighty as it is seeing in chapter 4 of the Book of Daniel in the narratives chapters, being chapter 4 the only chapter written by a gentile king.

Dan 7:5 LITV

(5)  And, behold, another beast, a second, like a bear. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth. And they said this to it, Rise up, eat much flesh.

Here in the Book of Daniel Chapter 7 verse 5, Daniel described the 2nd beast.  This is also indicative to the very stunning and dramatically way of Daniel’s description and more so of his detail oriented dream and visions.  Noticed in this verse, Daniel do not pay more attention to the way this beast is in terms of color nor height or weight, but instead described vividly the way the beast is raised and what it had in her mouth.  It is described as being rising up on one side.  On an animal behavior, this normally happens when an animal had found the pray to be devour and in a glamorous feast of satisfaction rest while knowingly there is not a capable treat around and her belly gets full.  Also it is interesting how Daniel specifically described what it was on the beast mouth saying and I quote; “…three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth…”,  when I saw this expression I went to prayer, I asked the Lord for spiritual guidance on the meaning of this expression.  Even when I had read of many others theologians studies and preachers sermons, masters of their domain (so they said), I was not completely satisfied, there most be more to it in the spiritual way.  So I pray.  It happened that I felt from the Lord and I hope in Him I am not saying or expressing something is out of His Word, and that is that the three ribs were three kingdoms that the Persian were capable to empowered and posses in every way.  That is even though the beast had being asked to devour more.  Those kingdoms, and this is based on my spiritual and historical observation, I must add, are the following;

  1. The Babylonian Kingdom
  2. The Mede Kingdom
  3. The Jewish (Israel) Kingdom

I will understand if many of you disagreed to my observations but that is what I though were the answers to my prayer request.  This is mainly, because in the description the three kingdoms are in the beast mouth.  So the three kingdoms already devoured by the beast during the take over of the Babylonian kingdom were those three kingdoms, based on history.  You might ask, what about Egypt and Greek kingdoms, do they count?  Yes they do.  But as you most remember, the beast is asked to rise up and eat more flesh, which means that during the process of the take over and incorporation of these other kingdoms by the Persians, the Persian kingdom it self was going to fall in the hands of the third beast.

Dan 7:6 LITV

(6)  After this I was looking, and, behold, another like a leopard, and to it were four wings of a bird on its side. And also to the beast were four heads. And rulership was given to it.

Daniel continues describing the beast in his dream and visions.  Here in verse six Daniel expressed to see a beast like a leopard with four wings on its side.  It is very interesting to observe that the other beast that had wings was the first beast, the reason for this two particular beast to have wings is because they were chosen by God to fit His will and plan, not so the other beast (Nebuchadnezzar Babylonian King and Cyrus the King of Persia (to whom He called by Cyrus own name even hundreds of years before Cyrus took the power)); this particular beast was Babylonian kingdom, which tells me that as quickly and powerful the Babylonian were taking over other nations and kingdoms that way it was going to be happening with the Greek kingdom, which is this third beast.  This kingdom was lead by Alexander the Great and in accordance with “Mathews Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible” (this commentary could be download for free under the used of the e-sword, software you could acquired for free under the website www.e-sword.org ).

Matthew Henry’s Commentary indicates the following:

“This was the Grecian monarchy, founded by Alexander the Great, active, crafty, and cruel, like a leopard. He had four wings of a fowl; the lion seems to have had but two wings; but the leopard had four, for though Nebuchadnezzar made great dispatch in his conquests Alexander made much greater. In six years’ time he gained the whole empire of Persia, a great part besides of Asia, made himself master of Syria, Egypt, India, and other nations. This beast had four heads; upon Alexander’s death his conquests were divided among his four chief captains; Seleucus Nicanor had Asia the Great; Perdiccas, and after him Antigonus, had Asia the Less; Cassander had Macedonia; and Ptolemeus had Egypt. Dominion was given to this beast; it was given of God, from whom alone promotion comes.”

I have to tend to agreed with him on this with the exemption of the use of the term “ruleship”

H7985

(Chaldee); from H7981; empire (abstractly or concretely.): – dominion.

This term in accordance with the strong numbers on the King James Version of the Bible means also “dominion”, and God of course gave that, because He is the only one capable to give so, but in addition to it the consequences of it as well.  What I mean by this is that the contemplation of this kingdom was not to only take over other kingdoms as fast as it did.   The consequences were much severe, to maintain proper control on such vast empire.  This empire will later fall in to the hands of there own predators and it was not going to be destroyed but instead assimilated into the Roman cultured to the point were it used to be said that Rome conquered Greece with his military power but Greece conquered Rome with their culture.

Greek became the main language in all areas of the needs for civilization to survived, it did took the place of the previous language used by the known world at the time of Babylonian and the Persian Empire, the Aramaic from Palestine.  The Greek language was now the center of the education, trade and writing, even for the common speech.  Many Roman use such language for them to communicate, not “Latin” but Greek.   At Alexandria the Old Testament was translated in Greek Language, also known this translation of the Old Testament as the “Septuagint”, due to the Large colony of Jews and many of them could not even speak their natural language, that is Aramaic but instead they communicated in Greek.  The New Testament was even written in Greek, as we know it.  From 167 BCE the Romans started to take over the Greek Empire, but the influence of the Greek was always to remain among them and even to this day.

(7)  And after this I was looking in the night visions. And, behold, the fourth beast was frightening and terrifying, and very strong! And to it were great iron teeth. It devoured, and crushed, and stamped what was left with its feet. And it was different from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns.

(8)  I was thinking about the horns. And behold! Another little horn came up among them, and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. And behold! In this horn were eyes like the eyes of the man, and a mouth speaking great things.

There are many things that we as human do not understand unless we have the Holy Spirit of God and by Faith only and only by Faith are that we can accept such things.  Daniel’s descriptions of things in his vision and dream are some of them.

Daniel is describing the fourth beast as he said; “…was frightening and terrifying, and very strong!..”  These three adjectives are the one Daniel’s choose to described the beast

There is nothing in the description that Daniel is given us that declared it is a Dragon, or other kind of rare beast, but it is for sure a unique of it’s kind in every way.  Also it is given the detail of having iron teeth.  Daniel also in a specific manner said the following;

It has 3 qualities of what appeared to be a strong fear ugly beast with the power of devoured, crushed and stamped whatever is left.  I had broken down the strong numbers meaning and reference above for your benefits and easier understanding of how important and simplified the terms that Daniel used to described this particular beast were.

So we should start from the beginning of the verse 7 again.

Dan 7:7 LITV

(7)  And after this I was looking in the night visions. And, behold, the fourth beast was frightening and terrifying, and very strong! And to it were great iron teeth. It devoured, and crushed, and stamped what was left with its feet. And it was different from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns.

We concluded earlier that the beast was not only a frightening, terrifying and strong beast giving with these qualities the superiority over the other prior beast seeing by Daniel in the dream, it has the visual appearance and has the strength to uphold the power that desire.  It does said that had iron teeth and when I came to that particular point made me think about what teeth are for and most of all where they are located in any creature created.  Teeth in accordance with the Microsoft© Encarta® College Dictionary is, “a whitish Bony Object in the Mouth of a Human or a Vertebrate Animal use for biting and chewing food”, it also said the following, “invertebrate part resembling a tooth is a sharp part on an invertebrate made of horny, calcareous, or chitinous material and functioning like or resembling a vertebrate tooth”.  But in this case Daniel said that were “Great Iron Teeth”, we know teeth are for chewing our food, beautification, protection in some case and many other uses, but in the case of the beast were for devouring, which in the meaning in accordance with the strong numbers meaning was either accusing or eating, and that is what exactly the beast will do.  Will not only accuse the victims on it path but also will eat them piece-by-piece until they are all gone.

The material that these teeth are made of are not a natural material for such part of any beast’s body, this material is more utilized by the human to create or assembled a piece of their own demised, and here is no exception. Also the teeth help us to communicate among each other, but in this case is not one of the qualities attributed to the beast.

Daniel indicates that the beast will also crushed, and once again in accordance with the definition of the strong numbers above it means that whatever will take will make it in a small pieces, unable to be re-use.

The third quality of the beast was that will stamped, and so we know in accordance with the strong number that the meaning of the word is to summit of humiliate those that will be in the beast past.

Daniel indicates that the Beast was different from the others before it and you might say, well a beast is a beast right?  And even when you are right on the spot, never the less there is remarkable differences in between this beast and the others.  Let’s bring some of those differences:

  1. We already agreed that this beast is the Roman Empire, and different from any empire of its time and or before it, the Roman Empire whenever they took another empire or culture, they different from the Babylonian or for that matter the Medes or Persian, the Romans would never take anything from the empire they conquered.  Nor the people they though were brilliant in science or math, not best musician, nor the best warriors, nor the best builders, not at all.  Instead the subjugated and inflicted pain and suffering to the new empire or culture until the conquered empire or culture felt to give themselves to the Roman’s authority without any rules and limitations.  It was not until the Roman Empire became more sophisticated that their policy of conquering others changes.
  2. The Roman Empire Army was a very unique force, to the point in where even today’s forces in many countries applied some principles from such forces in the past.  Whatever they were sent to conquered, could not and will not be left without achieving the proper result expected.  This was due to the fact that the Roman forces gave to the military retiree many privileges that were not available otherwise and they could only be obtained if the soldier were to survive the soldier carrier.  In order for a soldier to count on his retirement, they count fiercely on the man on his left, right and rear flank to protect each other in order to prevail in such career.  Each of them considered each other a family member until the end of the career of that particular soldier.  This I think is what Daniel sees as the “iron teeth”.
  3. The influence of the Greek culture was so strong that could be seeing in all aspect of the Roman culture, more so in their religious practices.  This particular influence was so remarkable that affected not just the way they live their privates and civil lives but their political empire.  It was so strong that affected even the development of Christianity.  As a result of this the proclamation at the end of verse 6 in this chapter on the Book of Daniel in regard to the second beast take effect, and the second beast rules over the fourth beast but in a cultural way.  This is called the “Hellenistic Period”.

Daniel continues describing the beast and said that has ten horns.  Let’s read the verse:

Dan 7:7-8 LITV

(7)  And after this I was looking in the night visions. And, behold, the fourth beast was frightening and terrifying, and very strong! And to it were great iron teeth. It devoured, and crushed, and stamped what was left with its feet. And it was different from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns.

(8)  I was thinking about the horns. And behold! Another little horn came up among them, and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. And behold! In this horn were eyes like the eyes of the man, and a mouth speaking great things.

So now the beast not only had ten horns but it did grew a smaller and more powerful horn, but not before three of the older horns were uprooted to make place for the little horn.  Read the following:

Rev_17:7  And the angel said to me, Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast supporting her, the one having the seven heads and the ten horns.

Rev_17:8  The beast which you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss, and goes to perdition. And those dwelling on the earth will marvel, the ones whose names have not been written on the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, seeing the beast, that it was a thing, and is not, yet now is.

Rev_17:11  And the beast which was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goes to perdition.

Rev_17:12  And the ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but will receive authority as kings one hour with the beast.

Rev_17:13  These have one mind, and their power and authority they shall give up to the beast.

Rev_17:16  And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, and will make her desolated and naked. And they will eat her flesh, and will burn her down with fire.

Rev_17:17  For God gave into their hearts to do His mind, and to act in one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the Words of God shall be fulfilled.

This is what the Matthews Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible said:

“The fourth beast was more fierce, and formidable, and mischievous, than any of them, unlike any of the other, nor is there any among the beasts of prey to which it might be compared, Dan_7:7. The learned are not agreed concerning this anonymous beast; some make it to be the Roman empire, which, when it was in its glory, comprehended ten kingdoms, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Britain, Sarmatia, Pannonia, Asia, Greece, and Egypt; and then the little horn which rose by the fall of three of the other horns (Dan_7:8) they make to be the Turkish empire, which rose in the room of Asia, Greece, and Egypt. Others make this fourth beast to be the kingdom of Syria, the family of the Seleucidae, which was very cruel and oppressive to the people of the Jews, as we find in Josephus and the history of the Maccabees. And herein that empire was diverse from those which went before, that none of the preceding powers compelled the Jews to renounce their religion, but the kings of Syria did, and used them barbarously. Their armies and commanders were the great iron teeth with which they devoured and broke in pieces the people of God, and they trampled upon the residue of them. The ten horns are then supposed to be ten kings that reigned successively in Syria; and then the little horn is Antiochus Epiphanes, the last of the ten, who by one means or other undermined three of the kings, and got the government. He was a man of great ingenuity, and therefore is said to have eyes like the eyes of a man; and he was very bold and daring, had a mouth speaking great things. We shall meet with him again in these prophecies.”

On my part, as a man of God and by Faith, I will say this is for the end times, in when the times to be reflective in the Lord our Savior is and will be as always very important because otherwise we will not be part of His Second Coming.  You might ask in what I am basing my opinion?  My answer is contained in the next verse.

Rev_13:1  And I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten diadems, and on its heads names of blasphemy.

Rev_13:2  And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and its feet as of a bear, and its mouth as a lion’s mouth. And the dragon gave its power to it, and its throne, and great authority.

Rev_13:3  And I saw one of its heads, as having been slain to death, and its deadly wound was healed. And all the earth wondered after the beast.

Rev_13:4  And they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast; who is able to make war with it?

At the end of times, in accordance with the Book of Revelation, The Beast will contain characteristics of each of these four beasts that Daniel saw in his dream and visions.

Dan 7:9-10 LITV

(9)  I was looking until the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of Days sat, whose robe was white as snow and the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was like flames of fire, its wheels like burning fire.

(10)  A stream of fire went out and came out from before Him. A thousand thousands served Him, and a myriad myriads stood before Him. The judgment was set and the books were opened.

Here Daniel expressed how his attention was called at the moment of the casting down of thrones, let see what the Bible has to say about that particular.

Mat_19:28  And Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, You who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Mat_25:31  But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.

Act_2:30  Being a prophet, then, and knowing that God swore with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loin, as concerning flesh, to raise the Christ to sit on his throne, see Psa. 132:11

Rev_3:21  The one overcoming, I will give to him to sit with Me in My throne, as I also overcame and sat with My Father in His throne.

Rev_4:2  And at once I became in spirit. And, behold, a throne was set in Heaven, and One sitting on the throne.

Rev_4:3  And the One sitting was in appearance like a jasper stone, and a sardius; and a rainbow was around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.

Rev_4:4  And around the throne I saw twenty four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty four elders sitting, having been clothed in white garments. And they had golden crowns on their heads.

Rev_4:5  And out of the throne come forth lightnings and thunders and voices. And seven lamps of fire are burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God;

Rev_4:6  and a glassy sea before the throne, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne and around the throne were four living creatures, full of eyes before and behind.

Rev_4:9  And whenever the living creatures shall give glory and honor and thanks to the One sitting on the throne, to the One living to the ages of the ages,

Rev_4:10  the twenty four elders fall down before Him sitting on the throne; and they will worship the One living to the ages of the ages, and will throw their crowns before the throne, saying,

Rev_5:1  And I saw on the right of the One sitting on the throne a scroll having been written within and on the back, having been sealed with seven seals.

Rev_5:7  And He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him sitting on the throne.

So Daniel eyes were brought from one point of attention to another, and after he sees the “thrones”, this is used as a plural noun, and all that I can say is to leave it to the Lord for the explanation of it, as the Word of God says, today in part we know…  It also continue saying that the “Ancient of Days sat”, and this name is in capital letters, this is without a doubt the descriptive name of the Only Living God, YAHWEH, The Beginning and The End.  If you read Revelation Chapter 4, you also will see how John described a similar vision of the Throne of God (see it in the above reference).  In verse 10 says that “the books were opened”, but which books, and by whom?

Rev_20:12  And I saw the dead, the small and the great, standing before God. And books were opened. And another Book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged out of the things written in the books, according to their works.

Dan 7:11-12 LITV

(11)  Then I was looking because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke. I was looking until the beast was killed, and his body was destroyed and given to the burning flame.

(12)  And the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away. Yet length of life was given them for a season and a time.

Rev_19:20  And the beast was seized, and with this one the false prophet doing signs before it, by which he led astray those having received the mark of the beast, and those worshiping its image. The two were thrown alive into the Lake of Fire burning with brimstone.

Rev_20:10  And the Devil leading them astray was thrown into the Lake of Fire and Brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet were. And they were tormented day and night to the ages of the ages.

As I had being meditating on this two above verse, Daniel is perplex by the way the little horn spoke, it is being said in the Bible that at the end times there will be blasphemers, read below:

2Ti 3:1-5 LITV

(1)  But know this, that in the last days grievous times will be upon us.

(2)  For men will be lovers of themselves, money-lovers, braggarts, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

(3)  without natural feeling, unyielding, slanderers, without self-control, savage, haters of good,

(4)  betrayers, reckless, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

(5)  having a form of godliness, but denying the power of it; even turn away from these.

Daniel continue saying that he was looking until the beast was kill, of course he is referring to the fourth beast, the one with four wings, teeth of iron, with a frightening, terrifying and strong appearance with ten horns and a little one added to it, that beast was cast to the burning flame. Read the above reference in Revelation 19:20 and 20:10.

Dan 7:13-14 LITV

(13)  I was looking in the night visions. And behold! One like the Son of Man came with the clouds of the heavens. And He came to the Ancient of Days. And they brought Him near before Him.

(14)  And dominion was given to Him, and glory, and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

As I read verse 13, it did remind me of the Book of Acts:

Act 1:9-11 LITV

(9)  And saying these things, as they looked on, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him from their sight.

(10)  And as they were intently looking into the heaven, He having gone, even behold, two men in white clothing stood by them,

(11)  who also said, Men, Galileans, why do you stand looking up to the heaven? This Jesus, the One being taken from you into the heaven, will come in the way you saw Him going into the heaven.

In the sacrifice on the cross, Jesus our Savior paid our debts in full and all that we are waiting for is for His return to take us with Him.

Dan 7:15-16 LITV

(15)  I, Daniel, was distressed in my spirit amidst its sheath, and the visions of my head alarmed me.

(16)  And I came near one of those who stood by and asked him the truth of all this. And he told me and made me know the meaning of the things.

These verses are self-explanatory.

Dan 7:17-18 LITV

(17)  These great beasts are four, four kings; they shall rise up out of the earth.

(18)  But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.

Here is the meaning of the four beasts, and as we discussed before hand, they are the four kingdoms we explained.

Dan 7:19-26 LITV

(19)  Then I wanted to know the truth of the fourth beast, which was different from all of them, very frightening, whose teeth were of iron and its nails bronze; who devoured and crushed, and trampled what was left with its feet,

(20)  also of the ten horns that were on its head, and the other which came up, and before whom three fell, even that horn that had eyes, and a mouth speaking great things, and its appearance was greater than his fellows.

(21)  I was looking, and that horn made war with the saints and overcame them,

(22)  until the Ancient of Days came. And judgment was given to the saints of the Most High, and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

(23)  And he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all kingdoms, and shall devour all the earth, and shall trample it down and crush it.

(24)  And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings; they shall rise, and another shall rise after them. And he shall be different from the first, and he shall humble three kings.

(25)  And he shall speak words against the Most High, and he shall wear out the saints of the Most High. And he intends to change times and law. And they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and one half time.

(26)  But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his rulership, to cut off and to destroy until the end.

Here in verses 19 thru 26, which are the one that the angel of the Lord is given as an explanation to Daniel, the angel expressed few things not included in the explanation of events by Daniel before hand.

  1. One of the things is expressed by the angel of the Lord is that the beast had nails of bronze. This might mean that will be able to do more damage.
  2. Also that the small horn that grew on the beast, made war against the saints and overcame them, but “until” the Ancient of Days came.  Please keep very close attention to the preposition “until”, which define a condition to be met for such event to happen.
  3. He (the little horn) shall intend to change time (that is seasons) and law.  This is very important to me, and so should be for you also.  The only Law that God is interested on is the Mosaic Law and as we know the false prophet and the anti-christ will proclaim they to be the ones to give salvation and peace, misleading even to many of the elite of the saints of the Lord.

Mat_24:5  For many will come in My name, saying, I am the Christ. And they will cause many to be led astray.

Mat_24:23  Then if anyone says to you, Behold, here is the Christ! Or, Here! Do not believe.

  1. They shall be given in to the hands of the little horn for a time (one year), times (two years) and a half of time (half of a year), which is the same as the three and a half years of Tribulation in accordance with the Book of Revelation.

Rev_12:14  And two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, that she might fly into the wilderness, to her place, where she is nourished there a time, and times, and half a time, away from the serpent’s face.

Dan 7:27-28 LITV

(27)  And the kingdom and rulership, and the greatness of the kingdom under all the heavens shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. And all kingdoms shall serve and obey Him.

(28)  Until now is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts terrified me much, and my face changed on me. But I kept the matter in my heart.

Amen and Amen to the One that is coming to Saves Us in His Name and His Name only Jesus our Lord.

Daniel, The king, The lions’ den, The Hand of GOD…

We have seeing the last five chapters of the Book of Daniel and today we will travel thru the last chapter of what is known as “the narrative chapters” in the Book of Daniel, chapter 6.

Before we could start with our chapter six I like to make reference to the “Chronological Order by Chapters of the Book of Daniel” Image in the Introduction of this Bible Study earlier in this Blog, in where you will noticed that chapter 9, chapters 11-12, and chapter 10 in that respective order are before the end of narrative chapter 6 of the Book of Daniel.

Dan 6:1 LITV

(1)  It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, that they might be over the kingdom.

In a brief review of the last chapter five, we left that chapter with the invasion of the Babylonian kingdom by the kingdom of the Medes, please read the below verse:

Dan 5:30-31 LITV

(30)  In that night Belshazzar, the king of the Chaldeans, was killed.

(31)  And Darius the Mede took the kingdom, being a son of sixty two years.

The Medes was a kingdom that quickly grew over the area bounded on the west by Armenia and Assyria Proper, on the east by Persia, on the north by the Caspian provinces, and on the south by Susiana.  The country was elevated and mountainous.  It was believed they were descendent of Madai, who was a son of Japheth (Genesis 10: 2), and the Greeks maintained that their name was adopted from Medus son of Medea.  This kingdom did not last to long in history.  Also read Genesis 10: 1-2 and 2nd Kings 17: 6, read below:

Gen 10:1-2 LITV

(1)  And these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood.

(2)  The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

2Ki 17:6 LITV

(6)  In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and removed Israel to Assyria, and made them live in Halah, and in Habor, by the river Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

We can appreciate the view of their development as a kingdom on the map below, which was extracted from the graphics of the American Bible Society included on the software e-Sword which is accessible to anyone for a free download at www.e-sword.org.

Mede and Babylonian Kingdom (Double Click on this link until you see the file in a PDF Format)

During this period of history, when a kingdom was taking by another power, the kingdom that conquered the lesser one, took advantage of the other by possessing the kingdom’s conquered best warriors, arms, craftsmen, and well-educated individuals of such kingdom.  There is an exception to this rule of course and that was the Roman Empire.

In accordance with the “Who’s Who and Where’s Where in the Bible” written by Stephen M. Miller, history and the Bible clash on this particular Persian king Darius the Medes, whose at the age of 62 took power over the Babylonian kingdom.  It is also believe that he, (Persian king Darius the Medes) reigned from 559-530 BCE and if that is right, it does fit with the legend on the image of the kingdoms included in this Bible Study that described the period of each of these kingdoms.  The term “Darius” was also used as a term declaring power and or authority.  At the end of all, I am a man of God and overall I trust more the Bible declaration of events over any other form of explanations. As the Bible say, be all men liars:

Psa_116:11  I said in my alarm, All men are liars.

Let’s continue with our Bible Study.

Dan 6:1-3 LITV

(1)  It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, that they might be over the kingdom.

(2)  And over them were three presidents (Daniel was one of them), so that these satraps might give account to them, and the king should have no loss.

(3)  Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king was planning to set him over all the kingdom.

Darius the Mede, decided to make his life easier by dividing the responsibilities of the kingdom, and set the kingdom into hundred and twenty districts with each district having what was call a “Satrap”, this word is a Chaldee word:

H324

אחשׁדּרפּן

‘ăchashdarpan

akh-ash-dar-pan’

(Chaldee); corresponding to H323: – prince.

And above them three presidents which also this is a Chaldee term:

H5632

סרך

sârêk

saw-rake’

(Chaldee); of foreign origin; an emir: – president.

Something very important to expressed and that is that Darius the Mede as his antecessor to the throne in the Babylonian kingdom, put on Daniel all authority and trust.  This is a great example to any man or woman of God that if you are guided by the Holy Spirit of God and do what is right on the eyes of the Lord, you will be always in a position of trust and power.

Job_11:18  And you shall trust, because there is hope. Yea, you shall look about and you shall lie down in safety.

It is remarkable how the Word of God described how God with the Holy Spirit blessed Daniel

Dan 6:3 LITV

(3)  Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king was planning to set him over all the kingdom.

By now I am sure you remember, during the Old Testament era there was not understanding of the Holy Spirit, even though the name of God was always used as a plural name and the Holy Spirit was mentioned but in series of manifestations, for a total of seven manifestations which completed the Holy Spirit in all, please read the following;

Isa 11:2 LITV

(2)  And the Spirit of Jehovah shall rest on Him; He will have the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Jehovah.

This by any mean did not took away the power and legitimacy of the Holy Spirit as the Third Person in God and even when now is so normal and common for us to understand, it was not so much for them during the Old Testament Era, but that is a different subject for a future Study.

Dan 6:4-5 LITV

(4)  Then the presidents and satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom. But they could find no occasion or fault because he was trustworthy. And no error or fault was found in him.

(5)  Then these men said, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the Law of his God.

As any place and or organization in where the human kind is involved, jealousy and envy comes to take part of human’s emotions.  Even when our lives are rightfully in the eyes of the Lord, we must not stop thinking that our battle is not with the flesh but as the Apostle Paul said:

Eph_6:12  because wrestling against flesh and blood is not to us, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world’s rulers, of the darkness of this age, against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenlies.

The other presidents and satraps were anxious to find in Daniel’s life some, for them to be capable to point their finger at and accuse him against such actions and behavior.  But they could find nothing to used against him (Daniel).  I just hope in the Lord we could also behave in such a way that nothing will and could be found to be accuse of as we go thru our daily path in life.  But as we all know, when there is nothing from where the enemy can get a grip of against our lives, then and only then, it does proceed to get our spiritual life in jeopardy with the hope on his part that we as believers either take our eyes away from the Lord or start to behave in an irrational non Christian like manner.

At that point the battle is not with you and neither against you but with the Lord of Host and the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  The Word of God tells us for those occasions the following:

Psa_18:39  And You have girded me with strength for the battle; You have bowed under me those rising against me.

Psa_24:8  Who is this King of Glory? Jehovah strong and mighty! Jehovah mighty in battle!

Psa_76:3  There He broke the fiery arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.

Psa_4:4  Tremble and do not sin. Speak within your own heart on your bed and be still. Selah.

This is very important for everyone to understand that even when Daniel was still praying three times a day looking thru the window of his room to the East which where it was the direction of the city of Jerusalem, as we will read later on this chapter, at that time there was not city nor Temple of Solomon, remember, the city and the temple were destroyed by the Babylonians during the siege.  But even when Daniel knowing very well so, his heart was still faithful to his roots and passionately devoted to God and His ways.

Dan 6:6-9 LITV

(6)  Then these presidents and satraps gathered together to the king and said this to him, King Darius, live forever.

(7)  All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects, and the satraps, the officials and the governors, have planned together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except from you, O king, he shall be thrown into the den of lions.

(8)  Now, O king, establish the decree and sign the document, so that it may not be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not pass away.

(9)  All on account of this, King Darius signed the document and the decree.

The devil is always very clever in stepping into the lives of the ones that are the followers of the Lord.  No exception in this case, in where the person that made the request to the king failed to mentioned in verse 7 that the request for such decree was not made by all the presidents as he said, but instead by all except Daniel the man of God.

Daniel was not the only victim in this plot, but it is Darius as well.  The king Darius had being mislead by the people he trusted and put on a position of power on his behalf.  Throughout all my years as a minister of the Lord, I had heard many preaching about this particular Bible passage, but none have mentioned how the king must felt about how he was used as a puppet for the devil’s work.  There is a misunderstanding among many in regard to the man as a king, in this case Darius.  He though that the decision he was making was the right decision, specially when his right hand man, Daniel, want it also, and that is base on what the person who requested the decree to be made told him.  So the king Darius was in no way hesitant to proclaim such decree.  There is also a stronger element to this situation and that is that Darius was not well verse on Daniel’s traditions and spiritual believes.  Darius was guided in a way that the result of such decision was going to be in danger to Daniel in every way.  Any decree in accordance with the Persian Law, could not and will not be abolished by none or anyone.  However for the believer in Christ there is a promise from the Lord of support and overcoming all evil thru Him (The Lord that is), please read Roman 8:28-39:

Rom 8:28-39 LITV

(28)  But we know that to the ones loving God all things work together for good, to those being called according to purpose;

(29)  because whom He foreknew, He also predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be the First-born among many brothers.

(30)  But whom He predestinated, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

(31)  What then shall we say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

(32)  Truly He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up on behalf of us all, how will He not freely give all things to us with Him?

(33)  Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? God is the One justifying!

(34)  Who is he condemning? It is Christ who has died, but rather also is raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession on our behalf.

(35)  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

(36)  Even as it has been written, “For Your sake we are killed all the day; we are counted as sheep of slaughter.” Psa. 44:22

(37)  But in all these things we more than conquer through Him loving us.

(38)  For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

(39)  nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

That is great for the follower under the Grace of The Lord, but what about for Daniel?  The New Testament was not around during Daniel’s time.  There were some writings available, such as the Torah, some other writings, but where to find them?  Remember Daniel had Isaiah’s writings and maybe others writing with him also.  What actually hold Daniel to be still and to understand that he was serving to the Only Living God?  His Faith?  His upbringing from the Jewish background?  His others three friends that we read in earlier chapters?  So what hold Daniel firm?  Will you be capable to be hold to that point in where you will submit yourself fully to the command of God?

The Psalmist said the following:

Psa_119:9  BETH: By what shall a young man purify his way? To keep it according to Your Word.

Are you thinking about such event and the way Daniel responded without any hesitation at all?  Are you in moments of difficulties right now and is there the word of God engraved in your heart to guide you?  Are you giving to the Lord the opportunity to guide you as only He can?

Enough of my questions… More for your meditations…

Dan 6:10-15 LITV

(10)  And when he had learned that the document was signed, Daniel went to his house. And his windows were open in his roof room toward Jerusalem. He knelt on his knees three times in the day, and prayed and praised before his God, as he did before.

(11)  Then these men met together and found Daniel praying and seeking mercy before his God.

(12)  Then they came near and spoke before the king concerning the king’s decree, saying, Have you not signed a decree that every man who shall ask of any god or man within thirty days, except of you, O king, that he shall be thrown into the lions’ den? The king answered and said, The thing is certain, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not pass away.

(13)  Then they answered and said before the king, Daniel, who is of the sons of the exile of Judah, has not set attention on you, O king, or the decree that you have signed, but he makes his prayer three times in the day.

(14)  Then the king, when he heard the word, was very displeased with himself, and he set his heart on Daniel, to deliver him. And he labored until the going of the sun to deliver him.

(15)  Then these men met before the king and said to the king, O king, know that the law of the Medes and Persians is that every decree or law which the king enacts may not be changed.

As I mentioned before, Daniel when he heard about the decree signed by the king, he went to present himself to the Lord in prayer and praises, with the windows open toward a city that was no longer existing and toward a temple that no longer was standing.  I must bring to your knowledge that one of the reasons why the Jews and the Jewish God, The Host of Hosts, The Only Living God, was so different to any other was because God was not a God of temples, nor of a particular shape, nor created by human kind or things of this universe.  God is God and He does not share His Glory.  That is Biblical, look for the following:

Psa 92:5-8 LITV

(5)  O Jehovah, Your purposes are very deep. How great are Your works!

(6)  An animal-like man does not know; a fool does not understand this.

(7)  When the wicked flourish like grass, and all the evildoers blossom, it is for them to be destroyed forever.

(8)  But You, O Jehovah, are exalted forever.

So knowing the Word of God is very important for us not to stumble.  We must know

We are the temples of the Lord, and wherever you are and will be, the Lord always will be there with you.  So open the window of your heart and praise and pray to the Living God in the moment of your affliction, and that thanks to the blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

(If you like to read about the moment of the building of the Temple of Solomon, here is the scripture in where you will be able to find it:   1st Kings 8 – 2nd Chronicles 6).

Notice in verse 11 how they came together to see Daniel in prayer and supplication to God, not a coincidence by a long shot at all, they want to be able to testified against the man of God with witnesses to the king Darius, and forcing the king to take action on his own decree, Daniel was brought up in front of the king.

In verse 14 it is observed how the king Darius, lost his sleep thru the night trying to take Daniel out of such dilemma.  Once again I like to mention that Darius’ intention was not to put Daniel in such predicament.  Remember the king was told in verse 7 of this chapter 6 that Daniel was aware of such requested decree.  But now it is not on the hands of the man.  It did not matter how much the king wants to do, there was nothing he could do.

Dan 6:16 LITV

(16)  And the king commanded. And they brought Daniel, and they threw him into the lions’ den. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Your God whom you constantly serve will deliver you.

I like to point out the significance of verse 16, in where Darius the king, expressed his feelings to Daniel in regard to his discontent due to the others presidents and satraps misleading request.  Also observed how Darius expressed his confidence on Daniel’s God providence.  YAHWEH was not the king’s god, it was Daniel’s God, and so knowing how in the past God protected Daniel, he (the king Darius), responded to Daniel with a certainty of victory in his expression toward Daniel.  It was almost as if he (king Darius) was convicted.

Dan 6:17-20 LITV

(17)  And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den. And the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his nobles, that the affair may not change concerning Daniel.

(18)  Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; and diversions were not brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.

(19)  Then the king rose up in the dawn, in the daylight, and hurried to the lions’ den.

(20)  And when he came to the den, he cried with a grieved voice to Daniel. The king spoke and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, your God whom you always serve, is He able to deliver you from the lions?

It is remarkable to see thru verses 17 thru 20 how the king Darius’ heart felt.  The man that he trusted the most is in the Lions’ den and he (king Darius), with all his mighty power could do nothing about it, but he did something that no one pay attention to, the king fast…  Maybe not be the same way as the fast that we as Christians are custom to, but he fast.  The king submitted himself to meditate as the long hours of the night pass thru, as the feeling of guilt came thru his heart, as the overpowering and long suffering of no sleep under the illusion of the “what if…”.

When the morning came he (king Darius) was there early calling Daniel but with a trembling heart.  Then a question emerge throughout the calling, “…O Daniel, servant of the living God, your God whom you always serve, is He able to deliver you from the lions?”.

Dan 6:21-23 LITV

(21)  Then Daniel said to the king, O king, live forever.

(22)  My God has sent His Angel, and He has shut the mouths of the lions. And they have not harmed me, because in His sight innocence was found in me. And also before you, O king, I have done no harm.

(23)  Then the king was exceedingly glad over him. And he commanded to bring up Daniel from the den. And Daniel was brought out of the den, and no harm was found on him, because he trusted in his God.

Verses 21 thru 23 are self explanatory, but I will like to add the way that the word Angel is spell under verse 22, and that is the spelling when it is referring to the Lord our Savior Jesus Christ in a form of the Holy Spirit.  We were able to see such expression on an early chapter of this Book when the three men were thrown to the furnace of the fury fire in chapter 3, read below:

Dan 3:28 LITV

(28)  Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent His Angel and has delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and have changed the king’s words, and have given their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God.

Also notice the expression used in verse 23 in chapter 6, “…And Daniel was brought out of the den, and no harm was found on him, because he trusted in his God.”.  The result of Daniel’s well being was not attributed to any other reason other than the provision of God toward his servant Daniel.  Once again the hand of the Lord moves in a mysterious ways.

Dan 6:24-27 LITV

(24)  And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel. And they threw them into the lions’ den, them, their sons and their wives. And the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones before they reached to the bottom of the den.

(25)  Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, the nations, and the languages who were living in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.

(26)  A decree was given from before me that in all the domain of my kingdom there shall be trembling and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God and endures forever, and His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed. And His rule shall be to the end.

(27)  He delivers and rescues, and He works signs and wonders in the heavens and in the earth, He who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

So as a result of the intervention of God in Daniel’s life, his accusers and all their house members were sent to the lions’ den.

More importantly it is expressed in verses 25 thru 27on how the king himself proclaim in a decree the power of the All Mighty God of Daniel throughout the kingdom.  In this verse we also observe how the Holy Spirit calls to the gentiles land the truth about the ruling and coming of the kingdom of God thru His Son Jesus our Savior in the Second Coming of the Lord.  Praise is His Name!  You must be ready to meet Him.  Are you ready?

Dan 6:28 LITV

(28)  And this Daniel was made to prosper in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

In verse 28 it is declare how Daniel prosper in the reign of Darius the Mede and on the take over of the kingdom by the king of Persia Cyrus, as it was seeing in the following:

Dan 2:39  And in your place shall arise another kingdom lower than yours,…

And will be seeing in the chapters to come.

The Hand of the All Mighty GOD and His Servant…

The Hand of the All Mighty GOD…

Dan 5:1-4 LITV

(1)  Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his nobles. And he drank wine before the thousand.

(2)  When tasting the wine, Belshazzar commanded the golden and silver vessels brought, those his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem, that the king and his nobles, his wives, and his concubines might drink with them.

(3)  Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God in Jerusalem. And the king, his nobles, his wives, and his concubines drank with them.

(4)  They drank wine and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, and of bronze, of iron, wood, and stone.

Before we can talk about this passage, it will be a great deal for some that will be visiting my Blog Page for the first time, to pinpoint some background on these events mentioned beforehand.

For us to be able to do so we must read the first chapter of the Book of Daniel in a brief manner, see below:

Dan 1:1-2 LITV

(1)  In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

(2)  And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. And he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

As you can see the vessels mentioned in chapter 5 were the vessels that Nebuchadnezzar the ancestor to Belshazzar brought to the land of Nimrod also known as Babylon.  The event that is taking place in Daniel chapter 5 is with different characters in the Bible with just a few exceptions, and those exceptions were Daniel (the man of God) and few other of minor importance in relation to the narrative of the chapter.  One of the characters that is not mentioned by name but that it does have a very significant importance is the woman that announced Daniel (we will see this person more in detail as the events takes place and develop thru out the chapter).

Babylonia it has been considered since its foundation as the “city of man”, in were the man tried to reach for God’s power by creating a tower, at which time there were no languages as we know them today, but God in His will disrupted the man unique ability of communicating in a common verbal language and disoriented the man by confusing the man’s single ability of a common language, read below:

Gen 11:1-9 LITV

(1)  And the whole earth was of one lip and of one speech.

(2)  And it happened, as they pulled up stakes from the east, they found a level valley in the land of Shinar. And they lived there.

(3)  And each one said to his neighbor, Come, let us make brick, and burning burn them. And they had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.

(4)  And they said, Come, let us build a city and a tower with its head in the heavens, and make a name for ourselves, that we not be scattered on the face of all the earth.

(5)  And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of Adam had built.

(6)  And Jehovah said, Behold, the people is one, and the lip one to all of them, and this they are beginning to do, and now all which they have purposed to do will not be restrained from them.

(7)  Come, let Us go down and confuse their language so that they cannot understand one another’s speech.

(8)  And Jehovah scattered them from there, over the face of all the earth. And they stopped building the city.

(9)  On account of this its name is called Babel, because Jehovah confused the language of all the earth there. And Jehovah scattered them abroad from there on the face of all the earth.

Babylonia is also a synonym of idolatry, read below please:

Amo 5:25-27 LITV

(25)  Have you brought near sacrifices and food offerings to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

(26)  Yea, you have lifted up the booth of your king, and Kiyyun, your images, the star of your gods which you made for yourselves!

(27)  And I will exile you beyond Damascus, says Jehovah, the God of Hosts is His name.

Act_7:43  And you took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, the figures which you made” “in order to worship them. And I will remove you beyond” Babylon.

The prophet Amos declared in his Book how the people of Israel were going to be exile, and in the Book of Acts we can see how Stephen in his defense in front of the Sanhedrim declared thru the Holy Spirit how God was dealing with Israel at the time of exile for the reason of idolatry.  In a common language the expression is as “if you want to follow idols go to where the idols are”…

Going back to Chapter 5 in the Book of Daniel, we must understand that the even took also place a few years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar, who was a predecessor to Belshazzar the king of Babylonia at the time of these events.  In Daniel chapter 5 verse 2 there is also mentioning of “his father Nebuchadnezzar”; but the word father was used for ancestry, in which we could be considering the meaning of this particular word here in this sentence as referring to his grand father.  Must be also noticed how is described by successions the order of “the king and his nobles, his wives, and his concubines”.

It is very important to understand and keep in mind that this king “Belshazzar” is not Belteshazzar, which was the name given by the Babylonian to Daniel at the time of the exile, read the following:

Dan 1:6-7 LITV

(6)  And there were among them of the sons of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

(7)  to whom the chief of the eunuchs gave names. For he called Daniel, Belteshazzar; and Hananiah, Shadrach; and Mishael, Meshach; and Azariah, Abednego.

Nebuchadnezzar the father in chapter 4 in the Book of Daniel went thru a great experienced in were Nebuchadnezzar understood that were not “gods” but instead “The All Mighty GOD”, in his process the king Nebuchadnezzar was subjugated to a process of humiliated events in his life, at the end, the Babylonian king recognized in a public manner his encounter making him the only and first gentile king who wrote a chapter in the Bible, but as humans we never learn from other people’s experiences, instead we must learn from our own mistakes even when that signified the lost of our own identity and with it many times over everything that makes us unique in every way.  And so it was Belshazzar the Babylonian king, descendent of the Nebuchadnezzar the king.

Power and greed are very dangerous if is not under the control of the Holy Spirit in the human kind, understanding this today we can see how such elements overwhelmed Belshazzar’s heart.  During this events narrated in this chapter 5 in the Book of Daniel the king of Persia is coming to take over the Babylonian kingdom.

Babylonia was at the time of antiquity a very fortified beautiful and extraordinaire city, rich powerful and beautiful in deed was the envy of many other kings.  Of course there is the will of GOD in everything that has to do with the human life, and so in chapter 2 in the Book of Daniel there is a very important detail that must be brought up for us to continue this discussion, and that is how God thru Daniel told to Nebuchadnezzar the falling of the kingdom of Babylonia into the hands of another king, read below:

Dan 2:39 LITV

(39)  And in your place shall arise another kingdom lower than yours, …

If you had followed my Blog you could also see that in a chronological order of chapters on the Book of Daniel, chapter 7 and 8 of the Book happened in between the facts of the end of Chapter 5.  Chapter 7 is the first year of king Belshazzar and in were Daniel have a vision from God in regard to four beasts, which were four kingdoms (we will discuss this chapter later on my Blog for your benefits and the glory of God).  Even when there are no specifics about the first three beasts, one of them was the Persian Empire. Also if you continue reading the chapter 8 you will notice that there is a vision from GOD to Daniel his servant, which Daniel himself mentioned seeing it before hand on the first vision he had (that is the one on chapter 7 of the Book of Daniel referring to the four beasts).  And in this second vision giving to Daniel by GOD, there is a two beasts, a Ram and a Male Goat; please read below:

Dan 8:5-6 LITV

(5)  And I was considering. And behold! A male of the goats came from the west, over the face of all the earth and did not touch the ground. And the he goat had an outstanding horn between his eyes.

(6)  And he came to the ram with two horns which I had seen standing before the canal. And he ran to it in the fury of his power.

But please let’s not anticipate the events on our study, this is just to let you know that the plan on the will of God is always reveal to his people for them to be prepared in prayer and their lives.

Let’s continue with chapter 5 of the Book of Daniel:

Dan 5:5-17 LITV

(5)  At that moment fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace across from the lampstand. And the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

(6)  Then the king’s color was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins shook, and his knees knocked one against the other.

(7)  The king cried aloud to bring in the conjurers, the Chaldeans, and the star gazers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Any man who can read this writing and reveal its meaning shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold around his neck. And he shall rule third in the kingdom.

(8)  Then all the king’s wise men came in. But they could not read the writing or make the meaning known to the king.

(9)  Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, and his face was changing on him, and his nobles were perplexed.

(10)  The queen came in to the banquet house because of the words of the king and his nobles. The queen spoke and said, O king, live forever, do not let your thoughts terrify you, and do not let your face be changed.

(11)  There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom was found in him, like the wisdom of the gods. Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, your father the king, appointed him master of the magicians, conjurers, Chaldeans and star-gazing ones,

(12)  because an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, explaining of dreams, and revealing of hard sentences, and the unraveling of knots, were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will reveal the meaning.

(13)  Then Daniel was thrust in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you that Daniel who is of the sons of the exiled of Judah, whom my father the king brought out of Judah?

(14)  I have even heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and light, and excellent wisdom, and understanding are found in you.

(15)  And now the wise men and the conjurers have been thrust in before me, so that they might read this writing and make the meaning known to me. But they were not able to declare the meaning of the thing.

(16)  And I have heard of you, that you can interpret meanings, and unravel knots. Now if you can read the writing and reveal its meaning to me, you shall be clothed with purple and have a golden chain around your neck, and you will rule third in the kingdom.

(17)  Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another. Yet I will read the writing to the king, and make the meaning known to him.

During this narrative, on chapter 5 of the Book of Daniel, the element of surprise is very exposed to the gentile king Belshazzar.  Everyone, which I understand why, bring the attention to the fact that the king was punished by God due to the used of the vessels of the Temple of God, in their festivities and adoration of their idols.  Let’s remember how God gave in chapter 7 and 8 of the Book of Daniel the visions to Daniel in regard to the beasts.  So even though it was very surprising to the gentile king Belshazzar the vision he had, it was already in the Divine will for those events to take place, this statement of mine does not give value to the believe of the term “destiny”, remember that God hold and control in His divine power the past, the present and more so the future.

The Bible state that at the moment in were the king, his nobles, his wives, and his concubines used the vessels to drink wine from them in honor to their idols, the king saw a finger of a man’s hand writing in the wall across from the lampstand, read below:

Dan 5:5 LITV

(5)  At that moment fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace across from the lampstand. And the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

Imagine how confused and terrorized was the king’s heart about this.  Was not something he imagine, there were witnesses to the event, there was not due to the lighting of the lampstand (it was across from it).  Let’s remember that only in a future event God’s writing will be seeing, and that will be on the writing of the commandments during the Exodus of Israel from Egypt.  This has God’s signature on it.

2Sa_22:8  And the earth shook and trembled, the foundations of the heavens were troubled, and were shaken; for He was angry.

Psa_77:18  The voice of Your thunder in the tempest; lightnings lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked!

Psa_97:4  His lightnings lit up the world; the earth saw and trembled.

And if that is the whole creation of the Divine Hand of God, imagine the reaction of a simple gentile king.

So the gentile king looking for answers, request the presence of all the wise men of the court.   He offered to the wise men power and riches to be given to the one with the answer.  It was offered by the king for the one to give the answered of that vision, the power of being third in the kingdom.  This had being seeing as an interpretation that this particular gentile Babylonian king was none other than a second in command, such statement based on the Bible narrative is far from the truth.  It was not known but until the moment in were what is described as the “queen”, whose described the famous Daniel who’s lived among them, it is very interesting this happened, because this tells us that Daniel falls under the shadows of his famous position of the kingdom, that he once hold under Nebuchadnezzar.  It is possible that this particular woman was the main wife of the gentile king, even maybe possible she was one of the wives, could it be also possible she was his mother or even older in the family tree, it is not know or even made clear for that matter, what is very clear is that she was the one who once heard of such man as Daniel that still around the kingdom.  This examination of circumstantial events make me think it was not to long ago for the king Belshazzar to take power on the throne, because Daniel was still alive and much remembered by others (it is estimated that Daniel was 90 years old).

This is quite important for those men and women of God, it does tells you that, you are never retired from the labor in the field of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Daniel (with an estimated age of about 90 years old of age) is called to the king and giving the offered by the king of power, riches and prestige among the kingdom.  These three elements were also the foundation of the idol called Mammon, (Mammon, in the New Testament of the Bible, is material wealth or greed, most often personified as a deity, and sometimes included in the seven princes of Hell. Mammon may have also been a reference to Caesar whose tax coin claimed Caesar was a god, forcing Jews to break the first and second commandments to have no other gods, nor to have their engraved images, or idols every time they paid taxes or tribute to Caesar. Mammon may have also been a reference to government, since the creator of money is government. Jesus was discussing two masters and the only other master besides God was Caesar).

There is also an important point to observed in the development of this event and that is that the language here used by God was unknown by the wise men of the court.

Daniel as a man of God, has the fullness of the Holy Spirit in him, was not known as such during Daniel’s time but that was so, read the following:

Isa 11:2 LITV

(2)  And the Spirit of Jehovah shall rest on Him; He will have the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Jehovah.

In this verse 2 on chapter 11 of the Book of Isaiah, it is mentioned the seven manifestations of the Holy Spirit, these are the following:

  1. The Spirit of Jehovah shall rest in Him
  2. The Spirit of Wisdom
  3. The Spirit of Understanding
  4. The Spirit of Counsel
  5. The Spirit of Power
  6. The Spirit of Knowledge
  7. The Spirit of the Fear of Jehovah

Dan 5:12 LITV

(12)  because an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, explaining of dreams, and revealing of hard sentences, and the unraveling of knots, were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will reveal the meaning.

Let’s continue chapter 5 in the Book of Daniel:

Dan 5:18-29 LITV

(18)  O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor.

(19)  And for the majesty that He gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed whom he desired, and whom he desired he kept alive. And whom he would, he set up; and whom he desired, he put down.

(20)  But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was put down from the throne of his kingdom, and they took his glory from him.

(21)  And he was driven from the sons of men. And his heart was made like the animals, and his home was with the wild asses. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the heavens, until he knew that the Most High God is Ruler in the kingdom of men, and that He appoints over it whomever He desires.

(22)  And you, his son, O Belshazzar, have not bowed your heart, though you knew all this.

(23)  But you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of Heaven. And they have brought the vessels of His house before you. And you, and your nobles, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine with them. And you have praised the gods of silver, and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see, nor hear, and do not know. And you have not glorified the God in whose hand your life, breath, and all your ways is.

(24)  Then the part of the hand was sent from Him, and this writing was written.

(25)  And this is the writing that was written: A MINA, A MINA, A SHEKEL, AND HALF MINAS.

(26)  This is the meaning of the thing: A MINA: God has numbered your kingdom and finished it.

(27)  A SHEKEL: You are weighed in the balances and found lacking.

(28)  HALF MINAS: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

(29)  Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and a necklace of gold around his neck. And they made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

From verses 18 thru 24 in chapter 5 in the Book of Daniel, the prophet of God is declaring to the gentile Babylonian king the events that took place long before he (Belshazzar) became king of Babylonia and of which we are all familiar with.

In verse 25 Daniel is describing the writing, and it is said before hand that none of the wise men could declare the meaning of such writings.  Once again we should mentioned the event that took placed in the Tower of Babel and you might say; why is this event so important to this narrative?  Well, God is the God of all created and the One that makes all things to have a meaning, right from the very beginning of all, in the Book of John is said to us the following:

Joh 1:1-5 LITV

(1)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(2)  He was in the beginning with God.

(3)  All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.

(4)  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men;

(5)  and the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.

There is no doubt that the Word was Jesus, the Second Person in the Trinity, present even before all created, and as the verse 3 in the Book of John said nothing makes sense without Him.

In the Book of Genesis in Chapter 1 we read the following:

Gen 1:2-3 LITV

(2)  and the earth being without form and empty, and darkness on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God moving gently on the face of the waters,

(3)  then God said, Let light be! And there was light.

Noticed here how even the Spirit of God Himself was moving gently on the face of the waters, that is the presence of the Almighty Himself, but there is God teaching us thru His actions that there is nothing possible or make sense without the use of His word, which is the Lord Himself and that is what is happening here in the Book of Daniel in chapter 5.  No other wise man and for that matter no one at all, could understand the meaning of such troubling words written by the Hand of God without the Spirit of God being present in him, as it was present in Daniel.  In human terms, that is, for anyone to understand a particular language either must know the language in use or must find a translator, which in this case the only translator of the language of God is the Holy Spirit, and can be posses by the believers thru the conviction and acceptation of the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior.

So in verse 28 the meaning is troubling to the king Belshazzar, his kingdom was given to other king.

Historically, it is well known that the king of Persia came to Babylonia and without a simple loss of life from either part, and even without the knowledge of the habitants of the Babylonian kingdom, the Persian took the city and kill the gentile king Belshazzar.  The Persian achieved such conquering power in Babylonia, because the Babylonian kingdom though they were impenetrable.  The city was fortified throughout the entire perimeters of the city, and the city was feeding from the Euphrates River passing thru the city, dividing the city in two.  There was no accessibility to the city but thru the river, which was also fortified.  The Persian King ordered the soldiers to block the water flow given them access to the city without the Babylonian knowing such actions, due to their festivities.

Dan 5:30-31 LITV

(30)  In that night Belshazzar, the king of the Chaldeans, was killed.

(31)  And Darius the Mede took the kingdom, being a son of sixty two years.

Interesting enough, this also give place to an incredible event in were the man of God, Daniel, bring to Darius the Mede the writings of the Lord in where God name Darius by his name long before this event took place, read the following:

Isa 45:1-3 LITV

(1)  So says Jehovah to His anointed, to Cyrus, whom I have seized by his right hand, to subdue nations before him. Yea, I will open the loins of kings, to open the two leaved doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut.

(2)  I will go before you and make hills level; I will tear apart the bronze doors, and cut the iron bars in two.

(3)  And I will give you the treasures of darkness, even treasures in secret places, that you may know that I am Jehovah, who calls you by your name, the God of Israel.

Only The Hand of The Living GOD Can Do All Things…  Praise His Name, Amen!!!

From the gentile king to the King of kings…

This file contain the images related to the Bible Study of Chapter 4 in the Book of Daniel.

Dan 4:1 LITV

(1)  Nebuchadnezzar the king to all the peoples, the nations, and the tongues that dwell in all the earth: Your peace be multiplied. Dan 4:2 LITV

(2)  It seemed good before me to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done with me.

It is very impressive to read Chapter 4 in the Book of Daniel.  Not everyone can realized how this chapter tell us, the way God Himself work on the life of any person whether he or she is His follower or not, but one thing is for sure, as long as it is part of the will of God, it will work for good, read Romans 8:28:

Rom 8:28 LITV

(28)  But we know that to the ones loving God all things work together for good, to those being called according to purpose;

Something of form, which was usual in proclamations, or circular letters, or any official document issued by the king, Dan_4:1. The royal style which Nebuchadnezzar makes use of has nothing in it of pomp or fancy, but is plain, short, and unaffected – Nebuchadnezzar the king. If at other times he made use of great swelling words of vanity in his title, how he laid them all aside; for he was old, he had lately recovered from a distraction which had humbled and mortified him, and was now in the actual contemplation of God’s greatness and sovereignty.  There is nothing more powerful than a simple text, document or expression, without the elaboration, which could lean toward the misunderstanding of the real root and reason of the idea that is intended.  There is no doubt that by now Nebuchadnezzar knew that there was only One Living God, the Most High God, as He was known by the gentile world.

It is also very interesting to noticed how king Nebuchadnezzar expressed in a form of a testimony the marvelous works that God had done with him, that is very clear at the end of verse two and is also a normal behavior on those that have a personal experience with the God of Heaven to be open witness to the rest of the world.  The declaration is directed not only to his own subjects, but also to all to whom this present writing shall come – to all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth.

Dan 4:3 LITV

(3)  How great are His signs! And how mighty are His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His rule is from generation to generation.

In verse three, there is an immediate element that, whether we can recognize it or not as such, it does exist, and that is the overwhelming influence of the Spirit of the Lord using king Nebuchadnezzar to bring a clear knowledge of the Kingdom to come of the Lord Jesus Christ to the gentile world, please read below:

2Sa 7:12-16 LITV

(12)  When your days are fulfilled, and you lie with your fathers, then I shall raise up your seed after you, who shall come out from your bowels, and I shall establish his kingdom.

(13)  He shall build a house for My Name, and I shall establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

(14)  I shall be a father to him, and he shall be a son to Me. When he sins, then I will chasten him with a rod of men, and with strokes of the sons of men.

(15)  But My mercy shall not be taken from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.

(16)  And your house shall be established, and your kingdom before you forever. Your throne shall be established forever.

Luk 1:32-33 LITV

(32)  This One will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

(33)  And He will reign over the house of Jacob to the ages, and of His kingdom there will be no end.

So God use anyone at any giving moment in life to declare His Glory to those that must be manifested.

Dan 4:4-9 LITV

(4)  I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house, and flourishing in my palace.

(5)  I saw a dream, and it terrified me, and the thoughts on my bed and visions of my head troubled me.

(6)  So I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the meaning of the dream.

(7)  Then the magicians, the conjurers, the Chaldeans, and the star-gazing ones came in. And I told the dream before them, but they did not make its meaning known to me.

(8)  But at last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. And I told the dream before him, saying,

(9)  O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its meaning.

From verses 4 thru 9 we see how the events took place as king Nebuchadnezzar himself narrated the facts of his experience.   Look at the way the king said how he was in a relaxing mode, with nothing to worry about nor to be concerned, indicating with this, that this event was not a result of his worry ness or troubles, which were none at the moment of his experience until the dream came to his life.  In many moments of our life’s it does happened and whenever we expected the least, things hit us hard and disturbed our peace confusing us a troubling way.  On those moments we must react as the Psalmist said:

Psa_46:10  Be still and know that I am God! I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.

Noticed also how the king ordered to his court advisers, that is why they are there for, but also after knowing that no matter how smart or brilliant a human mind is, what really counts in the human life is the relationship of the man and God.  Looked at the following verses:

Pro_2:6  For Jehovah gives wisdom; out of His mouth are knowledge and understanding.

Pro_2:7  He lays up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to the ones who walk in integrity,

Pro_2:10  When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul,

Pro_3:13  Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gets understanding.

Look at how the king Nebuchadnezzar called Daniel by his (Daniel’s original name) Jew name first, indicative that Daniel never give up his roots nor his faith or traditions even when he was forced to do so.  A man of God should never put his faith or his roots in the Lord in second place, but above and beyond all and everything, including his own life.

So the king leave to the man of God to determined the meaning of the dream that bother him (the king) so much and for so long.

Dan 4:10-18 LITV

(10)  As to the visions of my head on my bed, I was looking, and, behold, a tree was in the middle of the earth. And its height was great.

(11)  The tree became great and strong, and its height reached to the heaven, and its appearance to the end of all the earth.

(12)  Its leaves were beautiful, and its fruit plentiful, and food for all was in it. The beasts of the field sought shade under it, and the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.

(13)  I was looking in the visions of my head on my bed. And, behold, a watcher, even a holy one, came down from the heaven.

(14)  He cried with might and said this: Cut down the tree and cut off its branches. Shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts flee from under it, and the birds leave its branches.

(15)  But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a fetter of iron and bronze, in the grass of the field. And let it be wet with the dew of the heavens, and his lot be with the beasts in the grass of the earth.

(16)  Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let the heart of the beasts be given to him. And let seven times pass over him.

(17)  This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the command by the word of the holy ones, so that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomever He will. And He sets up over it the lowest of men.

(18)  I, Nebuchadnezzar, have seen this dream. Now you, O Belteshazzar, declare its meaning, since all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to reveal the meaning to me. But you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

For us to understand this particular dream of Nebuchadnezzar, we also have to understand what was considered the whole earth aspect of it.

During this time of the Babylonian kingdom, the Earth is not what we think of it in today’s time.  The Earth was described by the Babylonian as, if Babylonia it self was the center of Earth (I hope you can see the parallel of this with Israel been the center of the Earth in accordance with the Jews traditions.  Please keep in mind that the devil had always trying to imitated all that the Only Living God had done).  In this particular descriptive map of the Earth, been Babylonia the center of the Earth, it was crossed thru what was called “bitter river” or “Oceanus” from which the word Ocean is coming from (Please see the image page number 1 on the PDF File Format on this Bible Study).

So by definition the tree was in the center of the Babylonian kingdom, considered the center of the Earth, making it more dramatically troubling for king Nebuchadnezzar.

The verses 11 and 12 are simple and understood, the tree was the Babylonian kingdom as it grew in power allowed by the will of God.  Remember that the Babylonian king was used by God to do God’s will and all authority was given to him.

You can see such in chapter 1 verse 2:

Dan 1:2 LITV

(2)  And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. And he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

In verse 13 it is described by the Babylonian king how a “watcher” or “holy one”, please observe that the first thing in this particular description is the way the noun of watcher or holy one is written, in a lower case letters.  This particular observation allow us to think that the watcher was an angel of God and not “The Angel of GOD”, they represent the same Only Living God but the echelon of each of them is very significantly different.  One is a servant of God the other is part of the Only Living God.

Please keep in mind who is narrating such events is a gentile king with absolute no knowledge of the God of Heaven.  As a result, his descriptive narrative of the event is limited to the mind that is receiving it.

In verse 14 the incredible rude, painful and almost full of passion description of the watcher’s action tell us that there was no chance of repentance and with no way out or possible solution with a good end.  We must understand that when God desire to take action in our lives, he does not hesitate or enquired from anyone advised, but do what His will determined is best for our lives.   When that happened there is no source of life of any kind if His will is against us, but in the opposite could set your life forever free.

In verse 15 it is very clear that God’s will was to mutilate and to control Nebuchadnezzar’s life and to summit in to His will the power He Himself gave to the Babylonian king.

Verse 16 tell us how God was going to make a king of the most powerful kingdom on Earth (center of the Earth), a beast changing his heart and giving him to the mind of a wild beast.  Absolutely atrocious, inconceivable in any human mind even in today’s time.  Total humiliation to the most powerful man on Earth.  This action and change of heart was going to last seven years.

Verse 17 declares how Nebuchadnezzar’s hear felt in regard to God’s decision in his life as a human and king, and how that changed him as a man, to the point in were he admitted to be second under the command of God Himself.  In this verse also king Nebuchadnezzar express how the “living” is under the control of the Most High.  For a man to understand this deep and full knowledge of God, most be taken thru a lot on his life and back.  But this knowledge only comes from the personal relationship acquired between the human kind and God thru the acceptances of the ultimate subordination to the only authority with such power, God Himself and under the Grace thru Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, please read:

Eph_1:17  that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the full knowledge of Him,

Eph_4:13  until we all may come to the unity of the faith and of the full knowledge of the Son of God, to a full-grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

Col_2:2  that their hearts may be comforted, being joined together in love, and to all riches of the full assurance of the understanding, to the full knowledge of the mystery of God, even of the Father and of Christ,

2Ti_2:25  in meekness teaching those who have opposed, if perhaps God may give them repentance for a full knowledge of the truth,

In verse 18 noticed how king Nebuchadnezzar still under the ignorance of his idolatry, but even that he is under such misunderstanding, the king still with a meek heart to comprehend that only the servant of God could given the answer he needed.

Dan 4:18-27 LITV

(18)  I, Nebuchadnezzar, have seen this dream. Now you, O Belteshazzar, declare its meaning, since all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to reveal the meaning to me. But you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

(19)  Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stunned for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spoke and said, O Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its meaning trouble you. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream is to those who hate you, and its meaning is to your foes.

(20)  The tree that you saw, which became great and strong, whose height reached to the heaven and its appearance to all the earth,

(21)  and its leaves being beautiful, and its fruit plentiful, and food for all being in it, under which the beasts of the field lived, and in its branches the birds of the sky had their home:

(22)  It was you, O king, for you have become great and strong. For your greatness has grown and reaches to the heavens, and your rule is to the end of the earth.

(23)  And as the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from the heavens, and saying, Cut the tree down, and destroy it. Yet leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the grass of the field. And let him be wet with the dew of the heavens, and his lot be with the beasts of the field, until seven times pass over him.

(24)  This is the meaning, O king, and this the decree of the Most High, which has come on my lord the king:

(25)  And you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be fed with grass like oxen. And you shall be wet with dew of the heavens; and seven times shall pass over you until you know that the Most High is Ruler in the kingdom of men, and He gives it to whomever He desires.

(26)  And in that they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots, Your kingdom shall be enduring to you after you have realized that Heaven rules.

(27)  So, O king, let my advice be pleasing to you: Even break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by pitying the poor, whether there will be duration to your prosperity.

Now, after we see this narration taking place, in a very explicit and expressive way, in a more remarkable and significant expression was the meaning of it, to the point in were Daniel was confused and troubled by the meaning of it.  The meaning of such dream was very clear.  King Nebuchadnezzar was the tree in the dream, which became very powerful and rich without measure.  Up to this point every thing was great, until Daniel declares to the king that the real meaning was in favor of the king’s enemies and not on the king’s favor.  There are many times that we as people of God, are called to tell the truth does not matter how harsh could be.  So as the Only Living God says it, the king Nebuchadnezzar was going to become a beast for seven years and the throne of his kingdom was going to be kept until the moment that the king will recognize the power and all authority comes only from Heaven, that is The Only Living God, The Most High.

Please observed how merciful is God All Mighty, to the point in where He (The Most High) allowed the king to keep his kingdom even thru his trial, and after the king will admit his power comes from God and God only, the kingdom will be return to him (the king Nebuchadnezzar).

Daniel as an adviser of the king and most of all, man of God, advised the king on what he (the king) should do.  This expression is a very good example to all the members of the body of Christ, to understand that under any and every circumstances we are called to be truthful to the Lord and His kingdom by telling others what the Word of the Lord advised for the best result of everyone’s life.

Dan 4:28-33 LITV

(28)  All this came on the King, Nebuchadnezzar.

(29)  At the end of twelve months, he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.

(30)  The king spoke and said, Is this not great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom, by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?

(31)  The word was still in the king’s mouth when a voice fell from the heavens, saying, O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: The kingdom has been taken from you!

(32)  And you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. You shall be fed with the grass like oxen, and seven times shall pass over you until you know that the Most High is Ruler in the kingdom of men, and that He gives it to whomever He desires.

(33)  The same hour the thing was fulfilled on Nebuchadnezzar. And he was driven from men, and he ate the grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the heavens, until his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

From verses 28 through 33 is visible the result of a foolish heart.  Exactly as the Lord’s Word was said, it was exactly the way executed.  It is impressive how the human without the presence of God his/her life is just a beast of the wild, nothing more nothing less.  What makes a human different from any other is the presence of the Holy Spirit of God in his/her life.

Dan 4:34-37 LITV

(34)  And at the end of the days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to the heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High. And I praised and honored Him who lives forever, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His rule from generation to generation.

(35)  And all those living in the earth are counted as nothing. And He does according to His will among the army of Heaven, and among those living in the earth. And no one is able to strike His hand or say to Him, What are You doing?

(36)  At that time my reason returned to me, and the glory of my kingdom, my majesty, and my brightness returned to me. And my advisers and my nobles sought to me. And I was reestablished in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me.

(37)  Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and honor the King of Heaven, for all His works are truth, and His ways are justice. And He is able to humble those who walk in pride.

From verses 34 through 37 the king Nebuchadnezzar expressed how the experience brought him back in a humble but more powerful way.  Noticed in verse 34 how the king, after being under the human spirit, without knowledge and understanding of the spiritual world, he (the king) is capable to recognized the Lord of Host, the Only Living God, The Most High, and repenting himself from his old ways, is re-established to a higher level in the power of his kingdom and into the eyes of those that were part of his court.  Even more as it is said in verse 36 more power was added to him after he declared God as the only source of knowledge and understanding under the sun, as the Only Living God and The Most High.  The God that no one will ask or tell what to do, unless is under the will of God Himself.  The result of Nebuchadnezzar experienced is very similar to the one lived by the just Job, but in the case of king Nebuchadnezzar, he (the king) was not a Jew nor a man with the knowledge of God.  So do not think that this might not happened to you.  Pray this will not happened to you.

This is the only chapter in the Bible written by a gentile and a gentile king.

Praise the Lord, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Even under the burning, fiery furnace… The Angel of the Lord will be There…

Gold Image on Chapter 3 Book of Daniel

(Please to see the image presentation click on the above subtitle of this Post until you see the PDF file)

Dan 3:1-7 LITV

(1)  Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold whose height was sixty cubits; its breadth, six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

(2)  Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather the satraps, the prefects, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges and the justices. And all the officials of the provinces were ordered to come to the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

(3)  Then were gathered the satraps, the prefects, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the justices, and all the officials of the provinces, to the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. And they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

(4)  Then the herald cried with strength: To you it is commanded O peoples, nations, and languages,

(5)  at the time you hear the sound of the horn, the pipe, zither, the lyre, harp, bagpipe, and all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up.

(6)  And whoever does not fall down and worship, at that moment they will be thrown into the middle of a burning, fiery furnace.

(7)  Then at that time when all the people heard the sound of the horn, the pipe, zither, the lyre, harp, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages fell down, worshiping the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

During this time, in the events of Chapter three, Daniel and the Jews were for quite sometime in the region and kingdom of Babylon.  Please remember the events that took place during chapter two, in were king Nebuchadnezzar had the dream if the image that only Daniel was capable to interpret by the power of GOD.  There is no explanation of why the king acted this way, and created this image and ordered to be idolized by the people of his kingdom.  We had not being told either by the Bible, the formation the image had, we might speculate, but nothing to concrete about it.  All we know is what the Bible is telling us about the event that took place that day.  Many time over in our own personal lives this also is repeated, and let me be very clear about this comment and that is, that in many occasions in our lives God does not need to reveal all the details of our challenging moment, difficult trail, nor circumstances as long as we are in the hand of the Lord and under his will, all that we must do is to be still and know that He is GOD, read below:

Psa_46:10  Be still and know that I am God! I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.

King Nebuchadnezzar order to all of the members of his cabinet in government in a meeting, we must imagine how important was the event.  Throughout history all men of power, even those that have or start with good intentions, the greed and feeling of power and control over others, make them feel overwhelmed, to the point in were their wisdom and understanding get distorted.  For those that goes thru such moments reality is no longer part of a normal behavior, because they themselves do not consider themselves normal, but above everyone else.  No exception was king Nebuchadnezzar (lets remember as examples of this human behavior king David, king Solomon, the judge Samson and others).  The difference is how, we react in front of God and if we recognized our sins and repent from them, as king David did, making him (king David) a man after God’s own heart.

Just imagine, all the people of the kingdom of Babylon, due to the imperial order of the king Nebuchadnezzar, gather at once to worship this image created by the king.

Interesting enough there is a factor implemented in this narrative, which consist of the sounds of the musical instruments.  This reminded me, in the Book of Revelation how at the sound of the trumpet of God, He Himself will come from Heaven, please read:

1Th_4:16  Because the Lord Himself shall come down from Heaven with a commanding shout of an archangel’s voice, and with God’s trumpet. And the dead in Christ will rise again first.

Rev_10:7  but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, whenever he is about to trumpet, was even ended the mystery of God, as He preached to His slaves, the prophets.

So looking to this event, tells me how the devil had tried over and over through human history, replicating the Only Living God’s actions without a victory.

In the verse 6 is remarkable to see how the devil uses the human spirit of fear to make them to tremble and panic.  The opposite of God and the Lord our Savior, that not only tells us that the spirit of fear is not from God, but also that He Himself is love, read below:

1Jn_4:7  Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God, and everyone who loves has been generated from God, and knows God.

1Jn_4:8  The one who does not love has not known God, because God is love.

Hag_2:5  with the Word by whom I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so My Spirit stands among you; do not fear.

Rom_8:15  For you did not receive a spirit of slavery again to fear, but you received a Spirit of adoption by which we cry, Abba! Father!

What a concept, a God that is love and does not like to put His people thru fear.

The great difference between Israel and their GOD, from any other nation and their idols was that God was a God with no image, no temple, not to be feared by His people and a God of love.  It was inconceivable for other nations to understand that there was no image to worship, nor to fear, nor touch or see in a physical world.

You as a follower of the Lord must understand this important concept, God, The Lord Jesus our Savior and the Holy Spirit are ONE and They are without image to be worship in a physical world, is a God of love, and does not reside in a physical temple but in your heart.  Wherever you go, He is with you, never leave you nor forsake you… Never Ever…

In verse 7 is indicated how all the nations of the kingdom felt to worship the idol at the moment of the sound of the music.  Just imagine the noise and the incredible multitude.

The dimensions of the image created by Nebuchadnezzar are very explicit in the narrative in verse 1, let’s reviewed such dimensions;

Dan 3:1 LITV

(1)  Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold whose height was sixty cubits; its breadth, six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

It is believed that this measurement varied on the nation and people that you were referring to, but it is also believed the normal cubit in the Babylonian era was around 18 inches long.   So if we calculate such measurements of the image we can see that it was 90 feet tall by 9 feet long (for the purpose of this study, we will be assuming that the width was equal to the length) by 9 feet width (I am including an image that will give you a visual example of the physical attributes and magnitude of this idol on perspective to the Statue of Liberty of the United State of America.  The idol was approximately one third of the Statue of Liberty.  Click on the image title for you to see it in a PDF file format).  Let me be clear, in no moment the Bible says what kind of image was, whether it was an “obelisk” as many are saying in their stories or not, does not have importance for the purpose of God and God’s glory, so I will be limiting myself to express what the Bible is also saying.

On today’s standards the size of this image will not be that intimidating, but for the time in were was constructed it was very intimidating.  Imagine a normal size man of 6 feet on the side of an image completely built in gold of 90 feet tall, quite impressive image.

Dan 3:8-12 LITV

(8)  Then at that time men, Chaldeans, came near and slandered the Jews.

(9)  They answered and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live forever!

(10)  You, O king, have made a decree that every man who shall hear the sound of the horn, the pipe, zither, the lyre, harp, and the bagpipe, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image.

(11)  And whoever does not fall down and worship, he should be thrown into the middle of a burning, fiery furnace.

(12)  There are men, Jews, whom you have set over the business of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, do not pay attention to you. They do not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.

Observe how the Bible state in verse 8, “… Chaldeans, …”.

You must placed yourself in their place, as Chaldeans, they were the ones belongs to the land, to have every and any privilege, even more when those not citizens from your land are put above you as leaders of the land.  That was exactly what happened to them.  They Slandered the Jews; by definition of slandering someone is the following;

Slandered

SLA’NDERED, pp. Defamed; injured in good name by false and malicious reports.

Nothing new under the sun as the Bible says.

During this period of time and under the Babylonian Law, which ever law was established by the king would not, can not, must not be revoked by anyone under any circumstances, so Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego could neither do so in accordance with the Chaldeans.  Very important for you to noticed that during this narrative the Bible does not mention Daniel to be present, it is presumable that Daniel was, as a high ranking in command in the kingdom (read below in Dan 2:48), in a mission from the king Nebuchadnezzar out of the Land at the time of this event (but this is an hypothetical expression).

Dan 2:48 LITV

(48)  Then the king made Daniel great and gave many great gifts to him. And he made him ruler over all the province of Babylon, and chief of the prefects over all the wise men of Babylon.

Also noticed how the names of the Jews men were the ones given by the Chaldeans and not their native land names.  Making them a property of the state by birth and not Jew citizens, to the fact that the law was over them in a more restricted manner.

Dan 3:13-18 LITV

(13)  Then Nebuchadnezzar in anger and wrath commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king.

(14)  Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said to them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that you are not serving my gods, nor worshiping the golden image which I have set up?

(15)  Now if you are ready, at the time you hear the sound of the horn, the pipe, zither, the lyre, harp, and bagpipe, and all kinds of music, fall down and worship the image which I have made. But if you do not worship, in that moment you shall be thrown into the middle of a burning, fiery furnace. And who is that god who shall deliver you out of my hand?

(16)  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to return a word to you on this matter.

(17)  If it is so that our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning, fiery furnace, then He will deliver out of your hand, O king.

(18)  And if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.

There is nothing more serious to a leader than someone whose challenge him in public, and so they  (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) did.  To make sure the word was understood by the men brought to him (king Nebuchadnezzar), He repeated the command to them (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego), and once again they did not felt intimidated by the king command.  Fear does not exist in a Christian heart.

The king trying his hardest to make them to react to the command he has proclaim, insisted once again, but they did not moved in any way.  Please looked at the way the king expressed himself in regard to God, “… And who is that god who shall deliver you out of my hand?..”  This is the same man that saw how the God of Daniel revealed to him the meaning of a dream that no one else could.

The king used the word “god” as is specified by the narrative in the Word of God, making very clear how ignorant is the man that does not know God and neither have a real knowledge of Him, as the Word says;

Psa_56:13  For You have delivered my soul from death. Do You not keep my feet from falling, so that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

Jer_23:36  And you shall not mention the burden of Jehovah again, for each man’s word shall be his burden. But you have perverted the Words of the living God, of Jehovah of Hosts, our God.

In this verse 15, the word used is god, which is dedicated to idols and not to the Only Living God.  Since the beginning of time the name of our God has always being respected and utilized with a unique way used even when the language tell otherwise to be use.  The position of God in every way, language, and during any time since creation had, has and will be for ever place as the Only Living God, our Lord Jesus the Savior, the Holy Spirit and no one else to take His place.

The answered from the young Jews was unexpected from the king or the witness to the king.  Many situations we must stand alone, but we must stand as men of God.  Their answer was that, one-way or the other, their knees would not bow down to the image.

It is remarkable how these younger men, in a stranger land, under a leadership position, and placed in a critical moment, in front of the highest authority in their government, they decided to stand in what they believed and not reject their relationship with God, to the point of loosing their lives.  Today under the Grace we can count on the Word of God to guide us and instruct us as we go thru those difficult moments, but they could not do so.  They only count with the Torah and the writings, that was only if they memorized them.  Now do you see how remarkable this action was?

Psa_4:5  Offer the sacrifices of righteousness and trust in Jehovah.

Psa_5:11  But let all who put their trust in You rejoice; let them shout for joy forever, because You cover them. And let those who love Your name be joyful in You.

Psa_9:10  And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You, Jehovah, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Dan 3:19-23 LITV

(19)  Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with wrath, and the form of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He spoke and commanded to heat the furnace seven times more than it was usual to heat it.

(20)  And he commanded mighty men of valor in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to throw them into the burning, fiery furnace.

(21)  Then these men were tied up in their slippers, their tunics, and their mantles, and their other clothes, and were thrown into the middle of the burning, fiery furnace.

(22)  Then, because the king’s command was urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

(23)  And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the middle of the burning, fiery furnace.

Now, you expect from a king that is adjust to judge and deal with difficult situations to be able to deal with this moment in a wise and diligent manner, but in the opposite to what it was expected, the king indulged in violence, full of anger and in a repulsive feeling, order to “…mighty men of valor in his army…” to tie up these youngsters and to throw them up to the fiery furnace burning seven times more than normal.  When a man of God is taken to be tie up by the adversary, is always the used of a human strength the one that the enemy use, but as the Word of God tells us, that there is no human strength, not by sword or armies but by the Word of God that we have the power from the Spirit of the Lord.  They were thrown to the furnace, which was seven times hotter than before, and as you know the number seven means “completion”, and so God was giving total complete victory to the youngsters with an incredible revealing moment of truth that was going to be preserved throughout history.

Dan 3:24-27 LITV

(24)  Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was amazed. And he rose up in haste; he spoke and said to his royal officials, Did we not throw three men bound into the middle of the fire? They replied and said to the king, True, O king.

(25)  He answered and said, Behold! I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and there is no harm among them. And the form of the fourth is like a son of the gods.

(26)  Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning, fiery furnace. He answered and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out and come here. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the middle of the fire.

(27)  And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king’s officials assembled. And they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power, and the hair of their head was not scorched, nor were their slippers changed, nor had the smell of fire clung on them.

The image that I have of this event is the king Nebuchadnezzar sitting on his mobile seat, being carried by the servants of him, and seeing how the three youngsters that were thrown to the fury furnace of fire, the one that burn the mighty ones selected by him (king Nebuchadnezzar), are not even tie up, nor burn in any way, nor suffering in any form, and more intriguing there are no more three but four of them.  Noticed also how the king himself expressed about the fourth member in the furnace, “…And the form of the fourth is like a son of the gods…”.  It is my believe that the one with them was our Lord Jesus, please remember that this is at the time in where was no knowledge of Jesus our Lord, and if it was, was with the attribute of a future coming as a Messiah.  More remarkable is the fact that Nebuchadnezzar express himself the way he did.  He (king Nebuchadnezzar) stand up from his place, approach the ventilator of the furnace and to his amazed images ask for approval of his observations from the rest of the court.  And here is where it takes a wonderful turning point, look how king Nebuchadnezzar said “…servants of the Most High God, come out and come here…”.  He called them servants of the Most High God; today the followers of the Lord are also called servants of the Lord, so it is use a term very familiar to us today and with which we should not feel ashamed.  More importantly is the term that the king used when the king referred to God as the Most High God, and this term was always used by the gentiles’ people to make distinction of the God of the Jews versus their idols.  So once again king Nebuchadnezzar recognized the position of the Only Living God in the human chain.

We all know that God is not a God of confusion nor of half way things done, but a certain, concrete, truthful and clear without any doubts God.  The court advisers started to see if any harm or even smell came out of the three youngsters, but nothing at all.

Dan 3:28-30 LITV

(28)  Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent His Angel and has delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and have changed the king’s words, and have given their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God.

(29)  And a decree is set out by me, that every people, nation, and language who speak anything amiss about the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, he will be made into mere members and his house shall be made an outhouse. Because there is no other God who is able to deliver like this.

(30)  Then the king made Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego prosper in the province of Babylon.

It is remarkable, once again, to see how a gentile king is moved to recognize the Only Living God, the way he could only do it.  See also how Nebuchadnezzar used the word “…Angel…”, in the middle of the sentence this word is used in capital letter, why?

Let see the root of the word thru the strong numbers;

Dan 2:1 LITV

(1)  And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar was dreaming dreams, and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep was finished on him.

In the second Chapter of the Book of Daniel, we can observe how Daniel described his experienced in a new land and away from what he knew.  In the second year of Daniel’s life under the Babylonian empire, the writer (Daniel), expressed in an effective manner how the human spirit gets troubled when is not under the guidance of God.  In this occasion is a pagan king, whose spirit gets troubled by the uncertainty of life.  This particular pagan king feels powerless in front of a dream in were he has no saying about.  Just imagine you are the most powerful man on earth, to the point in were you can take someone else life on command, and suddenly that power means nothing in front of a simple but meaningful dream.  A normal human behavior is to question all the things we are unable to understand even when we can see them., and that make us more vulnerable than what we can imagine, and so was king Nebuchadnezzar.

Dan 2:2 LITV

(2)  And the king said to call to the magicians, and to the conjurers, and to the sorcerers and to the Chaldeans, to declare to the king his dreams. And they came and stood before the king.

As a result of his displeasure, king Nebuchadnezzar started to look for answers in the places he though he could find them.  It did seems quite right for him to search for answers on the right places, even when those right places were wrong.  We are only limited to our own understanding and the only thing that can expand the spiritual level and human knowledge is the opening of our spiritual eyes.  King Nebuchadnezzar reaches for what he considered the most knowledgeable and brilliant people of his kingdom.

So the king called the “ Magicians”, (Heb. hartumim, (Dan_1:20)) were sacred scribes who acted as interpreters of omens, or “revealer of secret things”; H2748

and to the Chaldeans…

Notice how at the very end of the statement in the titles of the most prominent and influential people to the king seat, it is expressed the “Chaldeans”, and even when many people do not pay attention to this very important point, it most be observed how the Chaldeans were consider on the kingdom a group set apart from those brought from other land conquered by the Babylonian.

Dan 2:4  And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic: O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will reveal the meaning.

Dan 2:5  The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The word is certainly gone from me. If you will not make known the dream and its meaning to me, you will be made into mere members, and your houses shall be made an outhouse.

Dan 2:6  But if you make known the dream, you shall receive gifts and a present and great honor from before me. Therefore, reveal the dream and its meaning to me.

Dan 2:7  They again replied and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will reveal its meaning.

Dan 2:8  The king answered and said, For I know that you buy time, that on account of all, you see the thing is certainly gone from me.

Dan 2:9  But if you will not make the dream known to me, there is one law for you. For you have agreed upon lying and deceiving words to speak before me until the time has changed. Therefore, tell me the dream, then I shall know that you can reveal the meaning to me.

Dan 2:10  The Chaldeans replied before the king and said, There is not a man on the earth who can reveal the king’s matter, because not any king, lord, or ruler has asked such a thing from any magician, or conjurer, or Chaldean.

Dan 2:11  And the thing that the king asks is rare. And there is no other who may reveal it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.

Dan 2:12  Then the king was enraged and angered. And he commanded all the wise men of Babylon to be destroyed.

Dan 2:13  And the law went out that the wise men should be killed. And they looked for Daniel and his companions, to be killed.

In Verse 4 it is important to see how specific the Word of God express the language used by the counsel of the king.  In the KJ Version this language is expressed as “Syriack”.  From this verse thru Chapter 7 verse 28 the Book of Daniel is written in Aramaic, which is a language related to Hebrew but distinct from it.  We can also see this language used in Ezra 4:8 – 6:18; 7:12-26, also in Jeremiah 10:11.  This might be an older form of the Canaanite language, which is considered an ancestor to the Hebrew and Greek language.  If we read the originals Books, we will see the total absent of the word “YAHWEH” or “JEHOVA” (Lord) in the Aramaic section.  In order for God to be distinguished from the pagan idols and pagan deities the Aramaic language used the words “King of Heaven” (Daniel 4:37) or “High God” Daniel 4:2, 24).  Please read;

(26)  And Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah said to the chief of the cupbearers, Please speak Aramaic to your servants, for we understand; and do not speak with us in Jewish, in the ears of the people on the wall.

It is expressed how the Aramaic was the international language of the time of Daniel.  Below is the root of the word in the strong numbers definition;

H762

ארמית

‘ărâmı̂yth

ar-aw-meeth’

Feminine of H761; (only adverbially) in Aramaean: – in the Syrian language (tongue), in Syriack.

It is important to mention that during the New Testament time the Aramaic language was the common language for the Hebrew people.  Also it is vital to know that this language during Daniel’s time was the language considered for political, business and anything in relation with international matters in the known world.

Observe in the text of the rest of the verses the king’s pressure of his emotional and intellectual desperation in search of the truth and meaning of the dream.  Also notice how the entire courts of advisers to the king were put in a warning mode, avoiding in such manner a scam on their part.  As a respond from the courts advisers and in an attempt of taking the pressure from their own, they acknowledge their inadequacy and incapability to determine what the king Nebuchadnezzar was looking for and a s result the imminent death as a punishment. Read below:

Dan 2:12-19 LITV

(12)  Then the king was enraged and angered. And he commanded all the wise men of Babylon to be destroyed.

(13)  And the law went out that the wise men should be killed. And they looked for Daniel and his companions, to be killed.

(14)  Then Daniel answered with counsel and insight to Arioch the chief of the king’s bodyguard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon.

(15)  He answered and said to Arioch, the king’s officer, Why is the decree so hasty from before the king? And Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

(16)  And Daniel went in and asked of the king that he would give him time, and he would show the king the meaning.

(17)  Then Daniel went to his house and declared the thing to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions,

(18)  that they might pray for the mercies of God in Heaven about this secret, that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

(19)  Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision, and Daniel blessed the God of Heaven.

King Nebuchadnezzar declares a law against all the wise men.  As it was a custom during this time, once a nation was conquered by another kingdom, the conqueror had the power to take with them, any and every men with knowledge, science and or any special powers to increase the power of the kingdom that had conquered such nation.  In antiquity there had been only one kingdom that step out of such custom, and whenever this kingdom took over another kingdom or nation, they would totally destroyed to the roots any signs of such kingdom or nation conquered by them, this used to give the indication from their part to the other nations the total control of knowledge, science, culture, and power was only in their hands without the need of others.  That kingdom was the Roman Empire.

In verse 14 of Chapter 2 in the Book of Daniel, it is vital to know that Daniel shows in his action the very principal of been a man of God.  In moments of desperation and in where there is way out, the man that is in the hands of the All Mighty, cannot and should not despair, nor be afraid, neither trembled.  These three qualities are essentials in every new man of God for their daily lives.

There is also an important element in this part of the narrative, and that is the immediate action taking by Daniel, avoiding so the possibility of losing not just his own life but also the ones of his fellows Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah (these by the way were the names of his natural land and culture).

It is also in verse 15 of the same chapter that we can see how the power of prayer.  It is more so when Daniel as to his fellow companions to be in prayer for an answer, which it is a demonstration for us today that the Bible it is infallible and as it is said in Mathew 18:19;

Mat 18:19-20 LITV

(19)  Again I say to you, If two of you agree on earth as to anything, whatever they shall ask, it shall be to them from My Father in Heaven.

(20)  For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst.

There is a point of importance that most be mention, it must be remembered that the temple was destroyed and the vessels of the house of God were taken away (read Daniel 1:2).  At this point the Jewish people did not have a place for them to dedicate their lives, nor their sacrifices and prayers to God.  As men of God we must adjust under the circumstances without jeopardizing the very principal of the dedication of our entire life to God and to his Gospel.

Humility in our heart is an element that every man of God should claim and posses.  Daniel in deed was given by God knowledge, skill in all writing, wisdom and understanding in all visions and dreams.  That could be seeing in the below verse;

Dan 1:17 LITV

(17)  As for these four boys, God gave them knowledge and skill in all writing and wisdom. And Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

These particular gifts from God where expressed in Isaiah 11:2, read below;

Isa 11:2 LITV

(2)  And the Spirit of Jehovah shall rest on Him; He will have the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Jehovah.

These demonstrate that even when during the Old Testament was a lack of knowledge of the Holy Spirit of God, that was not in any way at the absent of the Spirit of God, but in the other hand there was His presence in seven different manifestations well expressed here in this verse, and for which Daniel had them all, indicative of the presence of the Holy Spirit in him.

In verse 19 we can see how after we put ourselves on the hands of the Lord we received all and any answers to our dilemmas and for those that we pray, but that is only when we put ourselves on the hands of the Lord.

Dan 2:20-25 LITV

(20)  Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His.

(21)  And He changes the times and the seasons; He causes kings to pass away, and sets up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who know understanding.

(22)  He reveals the deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells in Him.

(23)  I thank You and praise You, O God of my fathers, who has given me wisdom and might, and has made me know what we ask of You. For You have revealed to us the king’s matter.

(24)  Then Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had chosen to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said this to him, Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon. Bring me in before the king, and I will show the meaning to the king.

(25)  Then Arioch quickly brought Daniel in before the king and spoke this to him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah who will make the meaning known to the king.

From verses 20 thru 23 in Chapter 2 in the book of Daniel it clearly visible how Daniel thank God for the mercy on given them the answer they needed.  Many times over the man of God most understand that the only way to get answers to our searches in life is by the mean of a constant prayer with a meek and humble spirit, and most of all the complete submission of our lives to the Lord and His will.  Daniels prayer is started with thanksgiving and exaltation to the name of God.  This is clear if we read Proverbs 3: 3-7, and it said;

Pro 3:3-7 LITV

(3)  Mercy and truth will not forsake you, tie them on your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart,

Here the Book of Proverbs is giving us a clear notion of why Daniel and his friends, that were with him under captivity, preceded with a complete trust in what and why they were doing.  Notice in the Book of Proverbs Chapter 3 verse 4  indicates how those that are and put themselves in the will of God will find favor and good understanding in the sight of the Lord and man. Going back to the Book of Daniel observed in verse 24 how Daniel went to Arioch.  It is very important for us to understand how significant this is, because Daniel do not back up neither hide from the man that has total authority to take Daniel’s life and the others as well, but instead, Daniel himself went to him and asked for Arioch to give them an opportunity to speak with the king Nebuchadnezzar, in a complete and solid feeling of trust to the One that sent him, God Himself.  It is also remarkable to know that Daniel not just asks for mercy on the Jew wise men (himself and Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah) but extended his request to those that were non-Jew wise men, that is noticed in verse 24 at the end of the verse.

It is imperative and part of our responsibility, for the man of God, to show mercy on others on our prayers, especially for those that are under the ignorance and neglect of their own sinful life.

Arioch, in an urgent moment, went to king Nebuchadnezzar, and he (Arioch) expressed to the king that he(Arioch) had found, very interesting to noticed how even during this time of the human history we can still see how many like to take advantage of opportunities for their own prosperity, not a new concept I guess.  Daniel did not corrected him, is nothing mentioned about Daniel doing so.  Please also press attention to the firm way that Arioch almost like knowing that Daniel was for the wining expressed to the king that this was not a mere matter of guessing on Daniel’s part but instead a sure thing.

Dan 2:26-30 LITV

(26)  The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Are you able to reveal to me the dream which I have seen, and its meaning?

(27)  Daniel replied before the king and said, The secret which the king has demanded cannot be shown to the king by the wise men, the conjurers, the magicians, or the star-gazing ones.

(28)  But there is a God in Heaven who reveals secrets, and makes known to King Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head on your bed, are these:

(29)  As for you, O king, your thoughts came on your bed, what should happen after this. And He who reveals secrets makes known to you what shall occur.

(30)  But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living man, but so that the meaning might be made known to the king, and that you might know the thoughts of your heart.

We must imagine the intensity of this event not just for Daniel as a man of God, putting on the line his reputation as a wise man, but more so the name of the Only Living God.  You could feel the tension in the air; the king is desperate for a solution and explanation to a dream that is robbing him of his peace.  In today’s terms we could call that “insomnia”.  Many preachers and leaders say that the king was having dreams, but if you noticed in verse 26 it only mentioned one dream.

Daniel immediately put at easy the king and explained to him why he (the king) could not get the answer from the wise men of the kingdom.  This way the king was not going to take revenge against any other wise men of the kingdom again.  Never the less, Daniel explained to the king Nebuchadnezzar from where it was the answer that he (the king) was coming from, and that was the only source of knowledge and wisdom known, “God in Heaven”, in this moment Daniel is making a clear separation between the pagan idols and his “Only Living God”.  Daniel also make sure he (the king Nebuchadnezzar) understand that the decision on getting an answer on such matters is not up to the king himself but on the hands of God.  In this particular, Daniel is making sure that all glory is giving to God and not to Daniel, the king’s wise men, nor anyone else for that matter.  It is very interesting to know that even when Daniel had the blessing of God, to posses the manifestations of the Holy Spirit (please read Isaiah 11:2 as we had referred earlier), Daniel never proclaim to be wiser nor closer to God, but instead give all glory to the “Only Living God” (term used by Daniel to the gentile to assure the king the separation of the Divine Power of God versus the idols he (the king) possessed).

Dan 2:31-36 LITV

(31)  You, O king, were seeing. And, behold, a certain great image! That great image stood before you with a brilliant brightness, and its form was dreadful.

(32)  The head of this image was of fine gold, its breast and its arms were of silver, its belly and its thighs were of bronze,

(33)  its legs were of iron, its feet were partly of iron and partly of clay.

(34)  You continued until a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces.

(35)  Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were together broken to pieces, and they became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors. And the wind carried them away so that no place was found for them. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

(36)  This is the dream, and we will tell the meaning of it before the king.

During the narration of the verses 31 thru 36, we noticed how powerless the king Nebuchadnezzar was feeling while dreaming such event.  It was an incredible nightmare.  Just imagine the confusion king Nebuchadnezzar was feeling, imagine the many questions in his mind and heart, the dreadful feeling of not been able to reconcile his sleep and adding to this impervious dilemma the tiredness of his soul and body.

Adding to all the above disruption in to the king’s life is the image of what is to come.  In verse 31 Daniel started to declare the dream the king Nebuchadnezzar was having and causing him disarray in his personal life.  So the image was in every way an awful and alarming figure intended to display fear.  The head of the image was of fine gold.  It is very important how clear the narrative in this verse indicates the quality of the material in which the head of the image was made.  It could it be expressed as of simple “gold” and it would it be enough for anyone understand the significance of such element in the image, but never the less that was not the case and Daniel specifically expressed “fine gold”.  You may ask; why is this an important point?  Well let’s see how this is apply to the interpretation of the dream.

As you remembered in Chapter one of the Book of Daniel it is very clear how God Himself delivered to the hands of Nebuchadnezzar the lives of the habitants of the kingdom of Judah.

Dan 1:2 LITV

(2)  And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. And he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

So as you can see this was part of the will of God, and even when it is delivered to a gentile king, it is still a divine plan to take place.  We must remember that God is not a God of confusion, and in any element of the human life in where the hand of God is placed there is no impurities on the actions or results of His intervention.  It is as a “fine gold”.

Read please the following;

Dan 2:37  You O king are the king of kings. For the God of Heaven has given you the kingdom, the power, and the strength, and the honor.

Dan 2:38  And wherever the sons of men, the animals of the field, and the birds of the sky dwell, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all. You are the head of gold.

Pro_25:12  As a ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover on a hearing ear.

Fine gold is believed to represent wisdom and spirituality when is mentioned in the Word of God, but in this case the meaning takes a different path to be presented.  It is representative of the hand of God in the Babylonian purpose in history in regard to the Divine Plan.  This gold is not adulterer by any other impurity but gold and gold alone, to the point in were specifically mentioned as such.

This is also very important to understand, because as the Divine Plan is for the Babylonian to take over the known world, the revealing knowledge to the king Nebuchadnezzar of the existence of the “Only Living God”, the “God in Heaven who reveals secrets”, and not just any god or deity or for that matter and idol, not at all but “God of gods”, please read below;

Dan 2:47 LITV

(47)  The king answered Daniel and said, Your God truly is a God of gods and a Lord of kings, and a Revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret.

Daniel continue on his explanation to the king, and in the same verse is described the image to have its breast and its arms were of silver…  This part of the image is representative of the Persian kingdom, and his king Darius, taking over the Babylonian dominium and power (we will see this in the near future on chapter 5 and 6 of the Book of Daniel).  Silver is known to be a metal representative of redemption, or the price of a soul.  Being silver a less valuable metal than gold, the position of this metal is clearly representative of a more conflicting intervention of the hands of the men in God’s plan.

Daniel continued on the image description and said… its belly and its thighs were of bronze… This as we know based on history, it does represent Alexander the Great and the Greek kingdom.  Bronze also is much less valuable than gold and silver, but in terms of the Biblical point of view is symbolic of punishment and symbolized also disobedience and sin.  As a result of such value it is placed on the body parts that have the least attributes, nonetheless it is still a valuable metal.

Daniel is continuing the description of the image by saying… its legs were of iron…  and once again history tell us that this was the Roman Empire.  It is very important to notice how each kingdom is bigger and bigger than the previous one and of course more antagonistic, belligerent and destructive.  So by these kingdom becoming to such extend in a sinful way more aggressive, the value of such kingdom is less in terms of the metal.  Less pure is the manifestation of their leaders toward God’s will and closer to their ambitious human destructive ways are.  The Roman Empire was so brutal, that it was the only empire in human history, that did not care for the other kingdom wise people, architectural buildings or structures, their facilities, nor science advancements and were always under the position of destroying anything and everything to erase the conquered kingdom past, humiliating such people to the point of making them slaves.  This was their practice until later in history, as their evolutional lives became more complex, so was their way of conquering other nations and it was more political enterprise for their kingdom rather than a demonstration of power and control to subdue others.

Daniel continued in his description of the image… its feet were partly of iron and partly of clay…  This part it very intriguing.  Not all the theologians agreed on this, so I will not bring their comments and observation but what I feel from the Lord to be the one I feel is the right one.

The last empire on human history or known by human kind in antiquity was the Roman.

Below is the years from 324 CE to 455 CE in were Rome was completely ransack.  Never the less Rome was never lost but in my personal and humble opinion the empire of Rome was assimilated by the world in existence. In were even today we seeing its influence.

324: Constantine I founds a new city, Constantinople (Byzantium)

326: Constantine has his son Crispus and his wife Fausta Flavia Maxima executed

330: Constantine I moved the capital of the Roman empire to Constantinople (Byzantium)

337: Constantine dies, and his sons split the empire: Constantine II (Spain, Britain, Gaul), Constans I (Italy, Africa, Illyricum, Macedon, Achaea) and Constantius II (the East)
356: Roma has 28 libraries, 10 basilicas, 11 public baths, two amphitheaters, three theaters, two circuses, 19 aqueducts, 11 squares, 1,352 fountains, 46,602 insulae (city blocks)
359: Constantinople becomes the capital of the Roman empire
360: pagan (Mithraist) general Julian (the “apostate”) defeats an invasion of Barbarians and is declared emperor by his German troops
363: Julian dies attempting to invade the Sassanid kingdom of Persia, which recaptures Nisibis and Armenia, and general Valentinian becomes emperor
363: an earthquake destroys Petra
364: Valentinian delegates Valens as emperor of the East
376: Valens allows Visigoths to settle within the empire
378: The Visigoths defeat the Roman army at Hadrianopolis/Adrianople
380: Theodosius I proclaims Christianity as the sole religion of the Roman Empire
393: Theodosius forbids the Olympic Games because pagans and shuts down the temple of Zeus at Olympia
395: Theodosius divides the Roman empire in the Western and Eastern Empires, with Milano and Constantinople as their capitals
402: the western Roman empire moves the capital from Milano to Ravenna
406: Barbarians invade France from the north
410: the Visigots sack Roma
410: Roma withdraws from Britannia
418: the emperor grants Wallia’s Visigoths to settle in Aquitaine (Atlantic coast of France)
425: the eastern emperor Theodosius II installs Valentinian III as emperor of the west
427: Gensenric’s Vandals crosses the strait of Gibraltar and lands in Africa
443: the emperor grants Burgundi to settle in Savoy
450: Theodosius II dies and Marcian succeeds him, the first Roman emperor to be crowned by a religious leader (the patriarch of Constantinople)
452: the Huns invade Italy
455: the Vandals sack Roma

The part of iron on the feet of the image seeing by the king Nebuchadnezzar was representative of the Roman Empire in it last time as an empire, but as it was falling apart in power, it was mixing with the rest of the world problematic influence.  I hope you know that clay is representative of the human race.  The man was created of the dust of earth, Paul spoke about the man being clay, and in the Book of Revelation there is also mention of such element.  Read below;

Rom_9:21  Or does not the potter have authority over the clay, out of the one lump to make one vessel to honor, and one to dishonor? Jer. 18:6

Rev_2:27  and “He will shepherd them with an iron staff” (they are “broken to pieces like clay vessels”), as I also have received from My Father. Psa. 2:8, 9

As you can see it is very intriguing that such empire is not dead or terminated nor destroyed but assimilated by the entire world in each and every nation known today.

Also another quality of the iron is being very inflexible (so it was the Roman Empire), but once is mixed with clay it becomes brittle and fragile, never the less the quality of steel is manifested in whatever is left of the empire, because it is actually mixed.  Read below;

Dan 2:41-43 LITV

(41)  And as to that you saw, the feet and the toes were partly of potters’ clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided. But there shall be in it the strength of iron, because you saw the iron mixed with clay of the potter.

(42)  And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile.

(43)  And as you saw the iron mixed with the clay of the clay, they shall be mixed with the seed of men. But they shall not adhere to one another, even as iron does not mix with clay.

History tell us that during the late turn of the 300s CE, the Roman Empire was divided among the four generals of the Roman Army, but we still seeing today its influence, in a remarkable presence, from the assimilation of the pagan customs in the Christian world thru the civil, legal, financial, social, scientific and so on.

Dan 2:44-45 LITV

(44)  And in the days of these kings, the God of Heaven shall set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed. And the kingdom shall not be left to other people. It shall break in pieces and destroy all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

(45)  Because you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold in pieces. The great God has made known to the king what shall occur after this. And the dream is certain, and the meaning of it is trustworthy.

In the narrative of verses 44 to 45, Daniel thru the Holy Spirit, declares how the “Only Living God” or “God of Heaven”, will destroy them by sending a Stone cut out of the Mountains without hands.  We must remember that event took place in the Cross when Jesus our Savior was giving as a sacrifice for our sins, paying all our debts and destroying all actions of the devil against His church and His people.  The Mountain represent the Kingdom of God on Earth for Eternity.

Mat_21:42  Jesus said to them, Did you never read in the Scriptures, “A Stone which the builders rejected, this One became the Head of the Corner? This was from the Lord, and it is a wonder in our eyes?” Psalm 118:22, 23

Mat_21:44  And he who falls on this Stone will be broken; but on whomever It falls, It will pulverize him.

Mar_12:10  Have you not even read this Scripture: The “Stone which the builders rejected, this One came to be Head of the Corner;

Rom_9:32  Why? Because it was not of faith, but as of works of Law. For they stumbled at the Stone-of-stumbling,

Rom_9:33  as it has been written, “Behold, I place in” “Zion a Stone-of-stumbling,” “and a Rock-of-offense,” “and everyone believing on Him will not be shamed.” LXX and MT-Isa. 28:16; MT-Isa. 8:14

1Pe_2:4  to whom having drawn near, a living Stone, indeed having been rejected by men, but chosen by God, precious;

1Pe_2:6  Because of this, it is also contained in the Scripture: “Behold,” I lay in Zion” an elect, “precious Stone,” “a Corner-foundation;” “and the one believing in Him shall not be ashamed, never!” Isa. 28:16

1Pe_2:7  Then to you who believe belongs the preciousness. But to disobeying ones, He is the “Stone which those building rejected; this One became the Head of the Corner,” Psa. 118:22

Rev_18:21  And one strong angel lifted a stone like a great millstone, and threw it into the sea, saying, This way, on a violent impulse, Babylon the great city will be thrown down, and it will never more still be found.

We must prepared for us to have the privilege, once Christ will come in His second coming, to be rapture and be part of such glory.

(46)  Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and did homage to Daniel. And he commanded an offering, even to offer incense to him.

(47)  The king answered Daniel and said, Your God truly is a God of gods and a Lord of kings, and a Revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret.

(48)  Then the king made Daniel great and gave many great gifts to him. And he made him ruler over all the province of Babylon, and chief of the prefects over all the wise men of Babylon.

(49)  And Daniel asked of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon. But Daniel sat in the gate of the king.

Now, this is what makes Nebuchadnezzar such an incredible king, that accepted the knowledge of God being the “God of gods” and a “Lord of kings”, this last phrase alone was very significant because established the echelon from king Nebuchadnezzar point of view (remember he was a gentile king), giving God the first place in his kingdom, making him (king Nebuchadnezzar) a gentile king under the command of God (Pure fine Gold Head).

I only Hope we all can do the same…

Timeline of Daniel’s Book

We started to study the Book of Daniel, and we had seeing how was developing on Chapter One of the Book.  But in order for us to be able to understand this book better, we must first, other than pray for spiritual guidance and wisdom, must understand how the Book of Daniel is placed in itself Chronologically.

I have an image, which I hope I will be able to add to this particular part of my Blog at the beginning of the this post title, for you to enjoy in a visible manner, just double click on the title for you to be able to downloading the file and to enjoying it.

Every reader must notice that Chapter One in Book of Daniel is a Preface of the entire history of Daniel from his beginning, that is since he was taken from Judah when it was besieged by the Babylonians in the year 605 BC  (please read the following);

Dan 1:1-6 LITV
(1) In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
(2) And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god. And he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
(3) And the king spoke to Ashpenaz, the chief of his eunuchs that he should bring some of the sons of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the nobles,
(4) young men in whom was no blemish, but who were of good appearance and having understanding in all wisdom, having knowledge and understanding learning, even those with strength in them to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the writing and the language of the Chaldeans.
(5) And the king set to them the portion of a day in its day, from the king’s food, and the wine of his drinking, even to rear them three years, so that at their end they may stand before the king.
(6) And there were among them of the sons of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah…

to the very last moment of his service to the king Cyrus from Persia (kingdom that took over the Babylonian empire, please read below);

Dan 1:21 LITV
(21) And Daniel continued to the first year of King Cyrus.

This is verified later by the Book of Daniel in Chapter 6 verse 28 (see  below);

Dan 6:28 LITV
(28) And this Daniel was made to prosper in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

I hope you remember as we learned before on the introduction of the Book of Daniel, on how the Book is divided as follows;  Chapters 1 thru 6 narratives and historicals chapters, and from 7 thru 12 in visions and dreams some of them with their interpretations in many cases.

If we do this in a visual way to understand it, we should draw a straight line in a piece of paper.  In this particular line is Chapter One of the Book of Daniel.  on one side of the line the beginning of the line will be the siege of Judah by the Babylonian and in the same side of the line at the very end of the line will be the overrun of the Babylonian kingdom by the king Cyrus king of Persia.

In that line, which will represent our time line for our personal reference as we go along with this study, on the opposite side write the numbers two thru six (Two at the beginning of the line and Six at the end of it).  The reason for this is as we explained before chapter one is a “Preface” of the Book of Daniel (as if is an outline of the book from beginning to end).  These numbers will represent the chapters of the Book of Daniel call “the narratives or historical chapters”.

Once that is done,at the beginning of each number write the first verse of that particular chapter, for example, the verse one of chapter number two will be corresponding to the number two on the line drawn, do the same for the other numbers on the line you draw, but only up to chapter 6.  You will understand a little better once we finished with this exercise.

Once this chapters had been marked on the timeline we drew, now we will see the importance of this particular exercise done before.

In the chapter number four, it is very important to know that this is the only chapter of the Bible (that I know of) that was written by a gentile king during the Old Testament.  Also in this chapter Nebuchadnezzar die and several successions later in the Babylonian kingdom one of his descendant becomes king Belshazzar (warning: please do not confused this king’s name with the name given to Daniel by the Babylonians when he was capture in chapter one).

Add chapter 7 of the Book of Daniel right almost at the beginning of the number 4, this particular chapter talks being the first year of king Belshazzar in his throne, which also coincide with the description of chapter 4 and talks about a vision received from Daniel of four different beasts, see the following;

Dan 7:1 LITV
(1) In the first year of Belshazzar, king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head on his bed. Then he related the dream, giving the sum of the matters.

Shortly after, write chapter number 8, this chapter is descriptive of the third year of reign of king Belshazzar, and in which Daniel described his vision of the Ram and the Male Goat, please read;

Dan 8:1 LITV
(1) In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first.

Please keep in mind that chapter 7 and 8 had happened in between the narratives or historical chapters 4 and 5.

Almost at the end of the narrative or historical chapter five, the Babylonian king Belshazzar dies on the hand of the Persian king Cyrus, who takes over the kingdom almost without any bloodshed, read the following;

Dan 5:30-31 LITV
(30) In that night Belshazzar, the king of the Chaldeans, was killed.
(31) And Darius the Mede took the kingdom, being a son of sixty two years.

So as you can observed, in the beginning of the narrative or historical chapter 6, we will locate the chapters 9, 11 and 12, which are about Alexander the Great and the end times, read as follow;

Dan 9:1 LITV
(1) In the first year of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans…

Dan 11:1 LITV
(1) And I, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I was standing for a supporter and for a fortress for him.

and Chapter 12 is sequence of 11.

But Chapter 10 is located at the end of the Book in a chronological sequence.

Dan 10:1 LITV
(1) In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a thing was revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar. And the thing was true, and a great conflict. And he understood the thing and had understanding of the vision.  At the end of the narrative or historical chapter 6 verse 28 described the way Daniel was prospered under the Persian power, this revelation is also observed in narrative or historical chapter 1 verse 21.

Dan 6:28 LITV
(28) And this Daniel was made to prosper in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Dan 1:21 LITV
(21) And Daniel continued to the first year of King Cyrus.

So if you see this Book in this chronological order will be easier to understand for the reader and to relay to the historical events to come.
